had eotvsideraMe husiness this week,
jait Tuesday a ' man named Skinner
was arrested for an assault and ljattery
on Mr. t-'liax. Lous. The party plead
Kuiltr to the charge, and it appears he
struck Mr. Log lis without the least

learned him a most wholesome lesson
by fining him f:.'1! and costs, which he
ha not yet paid, and is now in the

On Wednesday a dog case came up,
inwhich D. Wright, of Oswego, was

regards the destruction of the Ilon

county which will lie seriously incon

proba ility of it being re-built.
Soi.n. J. G. Tuner, of this place,
bought this week fronf Judge Randall
a farm in Polk county on tho river,
considerably improved, containing 320
acres, for which he paid $4,500. We
consider that Mr. Toner has secured a
bargain. He can make the first year's
crop pa j' for the whole farm.
I,ooir at This. We have a new

Cure for the Leoch in Sheep.
Editor ExTEnntisE:
Having read in your valuable pa
per not long since that in some local
ities sheep were dying from the
effects of what is termed ' 'leech in
the liver," which causes the jiw to
swell and a wasting away of the flesh
and finally death, and that a particu
lar farmer had lost quite a number,
I deem it for the good of all such
that the cure may be made public:
Mix saltpeter and salt, one-third of
the former and twor thirds of the lat
ter and give them what they will eat
of the mixture whenever you salt the
sheep. Mix every time you salt, as
the mixture will turn 3-ellow if allow
ed to remain together for any length
of time and the animals will not eat
it so freely. This will kill the leech
and cause the sheep to soon get well.'

the Lieutenant Governor by virtue
of being President of the last State

Irwin's promotion, as he is one of
the best journalists in California, a

walked the soil of California. It
would not surprise us if the next
time we have occasion to refer to Mr.

evidently between him and Hon.

The Secretary of War has an
nounced the death of Gen. Lorenzo
Thomas in a general order.
The crowd in tho Senate galleries
to-day was larger than any time since
the inauguration, and the floor is
also filled. Great anxiety was mani
fested to ascertain the location of the
seats of Andrew Johnson and promi
nent new senators. Johnson was as
signed a seat on the outer row on the
Democratic side, that formerly occu
pied by Bogy, who now has the seat
formerly occupied by Alcorn. Dawes
has the seat winch Chandler occu
pied. Upon the desks of Johnson
and Dawes were- large boun nets.
Burnside was welcomed by the clap
ping of hands in the galleries.
Vice-President Wilson called the
Senate to order at 12 o'clock, and
after reading the Proclamation of
the President the oath was adminis
tered to the new senators. As John
son advanced to the clerk's desk to
take the oath, there was a great ap
plause in the galleries, which was
soon checked by the Vice President.
After he was sworn in a large bou
quet was handed him by a page, and
he was escorted to his seat by Bogy.
All the new Senators having been
sworn, Morton offered a resolution
acknowledging the Kellogg govern
in Louisiana which was laid over at
his request. He then offered a reso
lution to adruit Pinchback as senator
from Louisiana and gave notice that
he would ask its consideration per
haps on Monday.
Washington," March C. The Re
publican members of the Serate are
in caucus this afternoon. There is a
full attendance including Chistiancy,
Cameron of Wisconsin, and Paddock.
The Democratic senators are holding
an informal consultation. John

Republican caucus after nearly three
hours discussion, decided that the
Senate shall. take the following ac

Tho following additional Pacific
coast measures failed to receive final
action by this Congress: Mitchell

Lake llailroad. All Oregon and
Washington Territory bills respect
ing swamp lands, namely: Nez Perce
and Klamath reservations, Olynipia
tide flats and lands, and the Seattle
and Walla Walla, and Roseburg rail
roads. Also all bills proposing to
compel quartz miners to patent and
pay for claims.
Ex-Congressman Itansier (colored)
has be:m apijoiutcd collector of the
2d district of South Carolina.
Senator Johnson pronounces as
forgeries the letters and telegrams
recently published as emanating
from him criticising the Democratic
party.
The speech of Minister Cnshing to
King Alfonso will contain only the
customary formal expressions of
friendship of the United States for
Spain. He, however, has special in
structions to govern him in the nego
tiations which were intimated under
the late republican government and
are now to be consumatud. These
negotiations contemplate the full set
tlement of all questions pending be
tween the two governments, while
Miuister Cnshing, like his prede
cessors, will also exert himself to ne
gotiate a new treaty of commerce
and navigation, none having been
made with Spain since -1795. Some
favorable arrangements respecting
our trade with Cuba will continue to
be pressed by our government.
Washington, March 9. The cau
cus of Republican Senators to-day
chose Ferry, of Connecticut, for
President of the Senate pro tern, and
011 meeting of the Senate he was
elected receiving 30 votes to 25 for
Thurman. - The caucus also approv
ed the report of the committee on
revision of standing committees.
In the Senate standing committees
the following changes have been
made in the chairmanship; Conkling
for the committee on commerce, in
plaf?e of Chandler, Hamlin, on com1
mittee on postoffices and post roads,
in place of Ramsey; Oglesbyon pub

place of Hamlin; Boutwell on revis

Patterson on education and labor in
place of Flanagan; Clayton on civil
service and retrenchment in place of
Wright. Two committees are given
to the Democrats, Thurman being
chairman of that on private land
claims, and Stevenson of that on rev

Poor Russia. A special to the
New York - Tribune of the 8th says
that the freshest rumor is that Att'y
General Williams is to be nominated
Minister to Russia, and ex-Senator
Carpenter to be appointed Attorney
General. There may be such a thing
as Flaxbrake going . to Russia, and
while we would sympathize with the
people thero on this infliction,. we
would be glad to let the old rake get
out of the country. But poor 'Car
penter will never be put in as Attorney-General
since his vote against
the Civil Rights bill. That bill set
tled his goose for him in the eyes of
Grantism. '

following summary of the exploits of
the carpet-baggers of Arkansas is
taken from the New York Herald:
"In 1868 the whole bonded debt
of the State was 3,250,000. It had
no floating debt; and had over $300,
000 in the treasury From July.
18C8, to October, 1874, the treasury j
received over 80,500,000, a floating (
debt was incurred of nearly $2,000,-
000, and the bonded debt was in-
creased $8,750,000 that is; to say,
in six years the men who mined Ar-
kansas spent 17,000.000, and this in ;

The people of Arkansas have turn
ed these scoundrels out of power,
and Grant wants to restore them by
the bayonet.

Bitters have such a wonderful beneficial
effect upon the general health ,and. are
such a reliable preventive of disease, Is
that they speedily overcome weakness or
disorders of the stomach, and thus insure
complete nourishment of the entire sys

various functions.. Unlike those stimu

fied by Judicious medication, the spirituous
basis of these Ditters, which is oft he purest
description, holds in solution herbal alter
atives and invigorants to which a foremost
rank has been assigned in materia medi

sovereign botanic elements enter into the
comiosition of the Bitters that constitute
them such a bonign tonic and corrective,
but also that they are so happily combined
that the full effect of eacli is exerted upon
the disordered or debilitated system. The

There is 110 question as to the result of
this medicine if persevered in. It is a
sure cure for scrofula, rheumatism,
Salt Rheum, and indeed all complaints
arising from vitiated or impure blood.
It is just what a good physician would
proscribe for these complaints, and wc
confidently recommend it as being the
best article now in use. Dr. Henry's
Cough I'alsam is the most affective
remedy for alfection of the throat or

contains no deleterious drugs, and can
