OREGM cm"0BEC0.X, FEB. 19, 137S.
I'M .N OT AFRAID."
BY OEO. S. KNIGHT.
The air was full of blood and flame,
WheD riding down to Orleans cam
A trooper bold, with heart of ice,
Whose banner bore this strange device,
" I'm not afraid."
Ilia brow was black, his eye beneath
Burned like th cigar 'twixt his teeth,
And like exploding boilers rung
Stentorian accents from his tongue,
" I'm not afraid."
Don't, cried the maid in wild despair;
Don't look so savagely or you'll scare
The gerttle children all to death,
lie ohlv growled with bated breath,
I'm not afraid."
Don't trv it on, an old man said.
If brain's vou'vo left within your head ;
lie paused" in doubt and heaved a sigh,
Put thumb to noseand winked his eve,
" I'm not afraid."
Beware the phantom White League
rage ;
Beware of the Banditti savage,
Full tive feet two he upwards rose,
Then s-iid and iilew his martial nose,
"I'm not afraid."
Now roomed in the St Charles Hotel,
He each five minutes rings the bell.
And as the servant opes the door,
Growls out the dread words o'er and
"I'm not afraid." '

Climatic Chniies in California.
Dr. Gibbons Submitted the follow
ing observations on the theory that
the climate of this coast is undergo
ing a change, at the last meeting of
the Acaduny of, Science in Sin Fran
cisco: "Au opinion prevails that the
climatrt of California has changed
since the American occupation, and
that further settlement and occupa
tion will produce further changes.
It rpay 1)3 well to enquire whether
tiiis be probab' , or indeed possible.
Tho peculiar features of the climate
of a country depend on two classes
of causes, the one fixed and the other
capable of change. The fixed causes
are mountains and plain:; and perma
nent bodies of water. The chang
able causes, such as man can modify
-or itivovp, a:" forests or the absence
of forests, cultivation of the surface
and drainage.
The climate of California depends
mainly on fixed causes. "We have
on the east the Sierra Nevada moun
tains, presenting to the wind an al
most impassiblo barrier. Hence
east winds are almost unknown and
will ever continue so. ()a the west
we have the ocean, with a constant
current from the north, bathing the
coast with water of the temperature
of 52 deg. at San Francisco. Winter
r summer this is the same. At
high tide the thermometer plunged
into the Bay at Meigg's wharf shows
this temperature in July as in Janu
ary. Besting upon the ocean is,
therefore, a body of air always cold.
It follows that at all seasons, and
under" all circumstances, the sea
breeze .will haic nearly the same
temijerature whdn it strikes Jho land.
It is the great equalizer of tempera
ture on the line, of the coast-, and
wherever it caul penetrate. Where
the coast is skirted with mountains,
tho ocean wind ft walled out by the
rMerras.

Steamer.

consequently cures them all ali!;e. It is an in
valuable protection to immigrants and persons
travelling or temporarily residing in the mala
rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily
while exposed to the infection, that will he ex

in sulli'-ient quantity to ripen into disease.
Hence it is even more valuable for protection
than cure; and few will ever sutler from Inter

decayed; but such as remain can bo
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, so that . a new
growth of hair is produced. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty "sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off,, and
consequently prevent baldness. The
restoration of vitality it gives to the
scalp 'arrests and prevents the forma

cleanly and offensive. Free from those
deleterious substances which make
some preparations dangerous and inju

benefit but not harm it. If w anted

nothing else can be found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it docs

long on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy
lustre, and a grateful perfume.
