DtK.n. Capt. Aaron Viekers died at
tho residence: of his brother in this city,
lst Friday morning, at the age of 3t
vears. h) months, and 1.1 days. He had
been si.-k but a short time, which sick
ness was hrjiught on him by being ex.
pos"d darii the cold weather in the
water. At f.ie time tho Albany sunk,
he was in command of her, and in his
anxietv to secure the machinery, labor
ed hard an I exposed himself. This
brought,ou ibl ceding of lungs, , and he
was soon cr.n'ined to his bed on board
of flie Success. Our Thursday he was
broght down here, in a very critical
condition, and on the following day his
spirit took its tlight. lie was well
known among steamboat men, having
been runuiijg' on the river for upwards
3 of twenty vj-ars, and there were none
moiv familiar with the river, or more
faithful in t icir duty. JIo was gener
ally respected by all who know him,
a man of geueroiis impulses ami liberal
heart. He has a brother and sister re
niding here,: and one in Montana and
Nevada, wiio have lost an ailection
brother. Toe funeral took place from
the residence of his brother, which was
largely attended, and his remains
were conveyed to the burying gound
f dlowed bya large concourse of sor
rowing friends. The steamers plying
on the Willamette had their llags at
half-mast on Friday in honor ol the
deceased, peace be to his remains.

Campbell, of this city, left last Monday
for Portland, where she has accepted
the position of Matron of the Tiishon
Scott Grammar School. We congratu
late the managers ot that institution on
having secured the services of Mrs.
Campbell, for we doubt whether one

the vicinity of Cuttingsville are still
of the impression that they can lind
ore containing silver, and a number
have lieen prospoctiiitr in the foothills.
That there is a deposit of silver ore in
that section, we have hardly any doubt,
and we trust some one will be fortunate
enoiiijh to strike it.

rolled off the blurt" between this place
anil Canemah, and fell near enough to
the track so that when the express
train came down on S -it unlay it struck
the wheels of the engine, knocking one
of the caps olf the wheels. No other
damage done.

this paper, left this place last Tuesday
for Olympia, V. T., on business con

dings in high life have recently taken
place, says the Oreonian, in both of
which the brides were Oregon ladies
occupying places of high rank in so
cial circles. We allude to the nup
tials of Gen. Cnvier Grover, of the
U. S. Army, brother of Oregon's
chief executive, and Miss Ella Miller,
sister to the wife of Hon. J. K. Kelly
TJ. S. Sentor from Oregon. The
wedding took place a few days ago
in Washington City. Also to those
of lion. E. Smith Kearney, TJ. S.
Marshal of Washington Territory,
and Mrs. S. M. Stratton, widow of
the late Hon. Judge Stratton, of the
supreme court of this State, which
took place at San Francisco on the
11th inst.

The Radical papers find fault with
the Missouri Democracy for not re
electing Carl Churz, a Liberal, yet
they do not find fault with the Rad
icals of Nebraska for not re-electing
Tipton, a Liberal. It makes a vast
deal of difference whose ox is gored.

ers. Isreal was recently laid out in
Maine, Win. D. was next defeated in
Minnesota, and Cad. has been laid
on the shelf in Wisconsin.

Cole was a lady much beloved by all
who knew her, and leaves a large
family relation and friends to mourn
her early demise.

How Received. A Washington

few carpet-bagging malcontents, are
contented with the present condi
tion of affairs in the State, and the
action of the President is regarded
as especially surprising in the face
of the Poland committee's almost
unanimous report in the case.

as an advertisement, ordered by The
Dalles Fire Department. They go
after the O. S. N. Company's Rep
resentatives in the last Legislature
in about the right manner. TJoby

did the job for them, and. . we trust
that they will remember the fact.

number, the Catholic Sentinel enter
ed its sixth volume, with very flat
tering prospects for the f utme. The
State Journal, at Eugene, also enter
ed its' tenth volume. It is a good
Radical vjaper, and never fails to
support the powers that be.
Mr. lieuben Harris, of Lafayette,
was robbed of $2,20 last Saturday
nisrht. the 7th iust.. by some light-
fingered gentleman, who entered Mr.
IPs sleeping apartment and took the
money from his pantaloons.
President Gatcb, of Salem, is suf
fering from a severe attack of inllam-
atory rheumatism, which has detain
ed him from his duties at the Univer
sity this week.
