Novel Barrets.
Bv means of an increnions process,
lately devised, a barrel can now be
made consisting of but ono stave
This, it appears, js accomplished by
turning a steamed lo?. of the length
of a barrel, against a sharp knife of
rennisite length, jind thus cutting it
into a continuous sheet of wood of
the thickness of a barrel stive.
Enough of this ribbon of wood is
then cut off for the circumference of
a barrel, and crozacl or chamfered by
suitable machinery. To give the
barrel a proper shape, slits are cut m
two ends by a gatg of saws, ami the
heads are thus brought to the requi
site sizo as compared with the bilge.
The usual number of hoops are not
jmt on, and tho barrel thus made is
said to bo eqnallv as strong as those
manufactured in the ordinary way,
the principal saving being in the
amount of time aud labor involved
in the" process, thj3 cost of material
being about tho same in cither case.
Since the creation of the world
fourteen thousand 'millions of humau
beings have fallen in tho battles
which man bas waged against his
fellow creature rdan. If this amaz
ing number of men were to hold each
other by the band at arms length
they would extend over fourteen
millions, five hundred and eighty
three thousand, tfcree hundred and
thirty-three miles of ground, and
would encircle tho globe, on which
we dwell, G08 times. If wo allow
the weicrht of a man to be. o:i an av
erage, one cwt.. (and tat is below
the mark.) we shall como.to the con
elusion that G, 250,000 tons of human
ilesh bas been mingled, disfigured,
gashed and trampled under foot
Lho calculation will appear more
striking when we state, that if only
the forefingers of every one of these
1 ntrteen thousand millions of human
homers were laid in a straight lino,
thev would reach more than GOO.OOO
miles beyond the moon ; and that if
a person were to undertake to count
the number, allowing nineteen hours
a day, and seven rdays to a week, at
the rate of G,000 per hour, it would
occupy that person oob years. Aru
pipes of human blood have been spilt
in battle. Dr. Di

us is tho way
sea-faring man,
told the marines
lie had secured:
cently married,
,t kind of a wifo
" My wifo is just as handsome a
craft as ever left a millinery dock, is
clipper built, and with a figure head
not often seen on a small craft.
Her length of keel is five feet eight
inches, displaces 27 cubic feet of air;
of light draught, which adds to her
speed in a ball room; full in the
waist, spare trim.
At tho time we were spliced she
was newly rigged fore and aft, with
standing rigging of lace and llowers,
main sail part silk, forestay-sail of
Valenciennes.
Her frame was of the best steel,
covered with silk, with whalebone
stanchions.
She also has a set of storm sails
for rough weather, and is rigging
out a small set of canvass for squalls,
which are liable to occur in this lati
tude sooner or later.
I am told in running down the
street before the wind, she answers
the helm beautifully, and can turn
around in her own length if a hand
CD somer craft passeg her."
Had Seen Kings Exoron. A gen
tleman was requested by a friend
to join him on a visit to the depot to
witness the arrival of the King of the
Sandwiches.
" No, sir, not much," growled tho
gentleman.
" Ilave yon ever seen a King in
your travels?" inquired the -friend,
marveling somewhat at his short an
swer. 44 Yes, sir," said the gentleman.
' I was once f Jund guilt y of seeing
three kings." Then, after a mo
ment's pause, wont on to say: 44 And
they cost me 3150. Those were war
times, however."
His friend suggested lie must have
been in bad company.
44 Well, I don't know," says the
gentleman, 44 1 thought I was in pret
ty good company at the time. I
called to see those kings in company
with three queens, another queen
.and an ace spot, and have never had
any desire to see one of the royal
family since.
His friend saw tho point, said he
passed, and shuffled on.
Paddy's Mistake. A couple of
xnsu laas, wishing to obtain a little
extra pocket money, determined to
go into the country during harvest
time antl work amoncr the farmers-
Encountering a kindly-looking man
of this class, they made application

"Uan you cradle?" asked the far

jNow au irishman in search of
work was never known to confess
ignorance of anything; bnt this
question was a puzzler. The boys
looked at each other as if for a sug
gestion. No use? At lonqth Dermis
looking boldly at the farmer said:
44 Of course we can cradle, but
cuddent ye give us a job out-doors?"

utaries, throughout oar entire country
during the Summer and Autumn, and
remarkably so during seasons of un
usual heat and dryness, are invariably
accompanied by extensive derange
ments of the stomach and liver, and
other abdominal viscera. In their
treatment, a purgative, exerting a
powerful influence upon these various
organs, is essential. There is no
cathartic for the purpose equal to
Dr. J. Waieb's ViNEQAa Bittebs, as
they will speedily remove the dark
colored viscid matter with which tho
bowels are loaded, at tho same timo
stimulating the secretions of the liver,
and generally restoring tho healthy
functions of tho digestive organs.
Fortify the body against
disease by purifying all its fluids
with the Bitters. No epidemic can
take hold of a system thus fore-armed.

obstinate and intractable cases.
For Inflammatory or Chron

Pin, Tape, and other Worms,
lurking in the system of so many thou
