THE ENTERPRISE.
ffREGOX CITY, OREGON DEC. 21, 1371.
WHAT IS A NEWSPAPER!
The question from a chiM, " What is
a newspaper?" the Doublin General
Advertiser gives the following reply :
Organs that gentlemen play
To answer the tastes ot the day.
Whatever it be,
They hit on the key,
And pii3 in fall concert away.
News from all countries and climes,
Advertisements, essays and rhymes,
Mixed up vith all sorts
Of (Dying reports,
And published tit regular times.
Articles able and wise,
At least in the e ditor's eyes,
And logic so grand
That few understand
To what on earv.li it applies.
Statistics, reflections, reviews,
Little scraps to instruct and amuse,
And lengthy debate
Upon mat tt'rs of state,
For wise-headel folks to teru.se.
And funds as they were and are,
And quibbles and quirks of the liar,
And every week
A clever critique
On some rising theatrical star.
The ages of Jupiter's moons,
Tho stealing ol somebody's spoons,
The state of tho crops,
The stve of the fops,
Tho wit of the public buffoons.
List of all plry.sical ills
llanished by somebody's pills;
Till you ask with surpriso
Why any one dies,
Or what's tho disorder that kills.
Who has got married, to whom ;
Who were cut oil in their bloom ;
Who has had birth
On this sorrow-stained earth.
And who totters; fast to the tomb.
Tho prices of cattle and grain,
Directions to dig and to drain ;
Hut 'twould uike me too long
To tell you in song
A quarter of wh;,t they contain.
