Tilton's Statements A Sickening
story lu ;use Excitement.
Sxs Fbaxcisco, July 22. The
statement of Theodore Tilton against
Beecher is published and has pro
duced intense excitement. In a long
letter to the Investigating commit
tee, he gives as his reasons for mak
ing the disclosures, that they had
been demanded by the committee
and by Beecher, and that as his wife
had left him he was no longer bound
to secresy for her sake. In the con
clusion of this letter he says: " This
desperate man; must hold himself
only, and not ime, accountable for
the wretchedness which these disclo
sures will carry to his own home and
hearth, as they! have already brought
to mine." He 'then proceeds to set
forth specific Aharges in substance
as follows: 4iTVit on the 2d of Octo
ber 1S55, ul 3Ply mouth church
Brooklyn, tJ marriage between
Theodore Tilton and Elizabeth M.
Richards was performed by Rev.
Henry "Ward Beecher, which marri
age thirteen ears afterward was
dishonored anu violated by this cler
gyman, through the criminal seduc
tion of this wito and mother. That
about nine yi;;us ago Bev. Henry
Ward Beecher began and thereafter
continued friendship with Mrs. Eliz
abeth 11. Tiltr;n, for whose native
delicacy and eitreme religious sensi
bility he often expressed to her hus
band high admiration ; visiting her
from time for lyears, until the year
1870, when ho ceased such visits,
during which period by many tokens
and attentions 3io won the affection
ate love of Mrs s Tilton whereby, after
a long moral resistance by her, and
after repeated assaults by him, upon
hermind, with: overwhelming argu
ments, he accomplished possession
of her person, maintaining witli her
thenceforward the relation called
criminal intercourse, this relation
being regarded y her as not crimin
al or morally wrong, such had ben
the power of hi-4 arguments as a cler
gyman to satisfy her religious scru
ples against suc.i violation of virtue
and honor. That on the evening of
October 10th, 1808, or thereabout,
Mrs. ,uzaletni li. lilton held an
interview with Bev. Henry ard
Beecher at his Jleswlence, she being
then in a tend

A state of mind, ov

criminal intercourse
took place between this pastor and
this parishioner, the motive on
her part being as hereinbefore stated,
not regarded by her at the time as
criminal or wrong, which act was
followed by a similar act of crimin
ality between tiiese same parties at
Tilton's residence during a pastoral
visit paid by 1! j
tcher to. her on the
subsequent bat
rday evening, fol-
lowed also bv
ser similar acts on
various occasid from the autumn
of 1808 to the spring of 1S70, the
places being the two residences
aforesaid, and occasionally other
places to which her pastor would
'invite and accompany her, or at
which ho would meet her by previous
appointment. That the first suspi
cion which crossed the mind of Til
ton that Bev. Henry Ward Beecher
was abusing or might abuse the af
fection and reverence which Mrs.
Tilton bore toward her pastor, was
an improper caress given by Beecher
to Mrs. Tilton while he was seated
by her side on the floor of his library
overlooking some engravings. That
Mr. Tilton, a few hours afterward,
asked his wife for an explanation of
her permission of such liberty,
whereat she at first denied the fact,
but then confessed, and said she had
spoken chillingly to Mr. Beecher
concerning it. That on another oc
casion Tilton, after leaving his house
in early morning, returned to it in
the forenoon, and on going to his
bed-chamber found the door locked ;
and when, on knocking at the door
it was opened by Mrs.Tilton, Beech
er was seen within apparently much
confused and exhibiting a flushed
face.
Mrs. Tilton afterward made a
plausible explanation -which, from
the confidence reposed in her by her
husband, was by him deemed satis
factory. That in the spring of 1870,
on Tilton's return from a winter's
absence, he noticed in his wife sucli
evidence of absorption of her mind
in Beecher, that in a short time en
strangement took place between her
husbaud and herself, in consequence
of which, she went into the country
earlier than usual for a summer's so
journ. That after an absence of sev
eral weeks, she voluntarily returned
to her home in Brooklyn on the
evening of July 2d, 1870, when,
then and there, within a few hours
after her arrival, and after exacting
from her husband a solemn promise
that ho would do Beecher no harm
nor communicate to him what she
was about to say, she made a circum
stantial confession? to her husband
of the criminal facts stated, accom
panied with citations from Beecher's
arguments and reasonings with her
to overcome her long maintained
scruples agains-t yielding to his de
sires; and declaring that she had
committed no wrong to her husband
or her marriago vow quoting in sup
port of this opinion that her pastor
hail reiKatediy assured her that she
was spotless and chaste, which she
believed herself to be. She further
stated that he said the commerce
with him never proceeded from "low
or vulgar thoughts, either on her
part or his, but always from pure af
fection and hum religious love." She
stated that Mr. Beecher habitually
characterized their intimacy by the
term of "nest-hiding." That she
would suffer iain and sorrow if his
hidden secret were ever known.
To this statement succeed a series
of letters by Mrs. Tilton, Mr. Tilton
and Beecher. Hers to her husband
are confessions of the seduction, and
charges that she was overpowered
by Beecher'sarguments and reason
ings against the immorality of their
intercourse.
