MY MOTHER'S VOICE.
From Bellow's Falls Intellisencef.
Mv mother's voice I how often creep
Its cadence on my lonely hours I -
Like healing sent on wings of sleep,
Or dew to the unconscious flowers.
I mi"-ht forget her melting prayer.
While pleasure's pulses madly fly;
But in the still, unbrokenair.
Her gentle tones comes stealing by
And years of sin and manhood flee,"
And leave me at my mother's knee.
The book of nature, and the print
Of beauty on the whispering sea,
Give still to me some lineament
Of which I have been taught to be.
Mv heart is harder, and perhaps
Manliness has drank up tears,
And there's a mildew in the lapse
Of a few miserable years;
Tint nature's book is even yet
With all my mother's lessons writ.
I have been out at eventide,
Beneath a moonlight skv of spring,
When earth was garnished like a bride,
And night had on her silver wing,
When bursting buds and diamond
frass,
waters leaping to the light,
And all that make the pulses pass
O With wilder lleetness, through
the
niuht,
When all was beauty, then have I,
With friends ou whom my lovo
ilung.
Like myrrh on the wings of Arab j',
Ciaz'd iip where evening's lamp
hung
IS
is
And when the beauteous spirit there
Flung over me its gold chain.
My mother's voice came on the air
Like the light dropping of the rain ;
And resting on some silver star,
The spirit of a bending knee,
I've pour'd deep anil fervent prayer,
That our eternity might be
To rise is heaven like stars at night,
And tread a living path of light.

Maids vs. Widows.
The following is a veritable peti
3 tion signed by sixteen maids of the
town of Charleston, S. C, and pre
sented to his Excellency Gov. John
son, of that province, in the 1783:
" The humble petition of all the
maid whose names are underwritten:
"Whereas, We, the humble peti
tioners, are at present in a very mel
ancholy disposition of mind, consid
ering how all the lachelors are cn -tivated
by widows, and our more
youthful charms neglected; in con
sequence of all this our request is
that your Excellency will, for the
r futnre, order that no widow presume
" to marry any young man until the
maids are provided for, or to pay
each of them a fine for satisfaction
for invading our liberties, and like
wise a Hue to oe laid on all such
bachelors as shall be married to wid
ows. The great disadvantage it is
to us maids is, that the widows, by
their forward carriages, do snap up
the young men, and to have the van
ity to think their merits beyond ours,
"which is a great imposition on ns,
who ought to have the preference.
This is humbly recommended to
your Excellency's consideration, and
Lope you will permit no further in
sults. And we poor maids, in duty
bound, will ever pray."
