1 Terrible Disaster in Massachusetts.
IIatdexville, Mass., May 1C.
The reservoir supplying the mann-
factories of Williamsburg, .Leeds
and IlavJeuville broke this morning.
The torrent swept down, the hills
and through those villages, almost
completely destroying them. Whole
houses and many factories were car
ried off. Several tenement blocks
were crushed, and the inmates had
not time to escape. Dead bodies are
constantly arriving. Twenty-three
have been discovered already. It is
estimated that one hundred persons
have perished. The water is now
falling. The reservoir comprised
ir0 acres, and had an average depth
of thirty feet. It was drawn up in
day-time to supply the mills at Hay
denville, Williamsburg and Flor
ence. The reservoir was construct
ed, about twelve years ago. Last
vear the reservoir was repaired at
.heavy expense, and was supposed to
be perfectly secure, although it
seemed leaky.
Boston", May 1G. The villages
affected by the breaking of the res
ervoir are Williamsburg, llayden
ville, Leeds and Florence. They
are situated on Mill Iliver, which
runs into the Connecticut at North
ampton and Williamsburg. Mill
River divides one branch, rising at
Goshen. It has two large reservoirs.
There is also a reservoir on the
branch rising at Conway. The res
ervoirs were considered to be sub
stantially constructed, skillful engin
eers having built after the most ap
proved and modern methods. Much
money was spent during the year in
r construction. The oldest dam
was built twenty-five years ago, and
is situated on the Goshen branch.
It has been carefully rebuilt within
two Years. .The capital involved in
the 'disater is 5.000.000. The im
mediate port ulation suffering must
be about 5,000. almost wholly of the
manufacturing class. s
A dispatch from the scene of the
disaster to-day gives the following
particulars: At Skinnersville, Har
den, Gore Sc Cn.'s stores and the
liavdenville Saving Bank, ivfth the
safe, were swept awav. The safe
contained 000. The houses of
F. M. Graves, F. Ames, and several
others, the Foomis Hotel, Harden v
Co.':i Tobacco Factory, and two iron
b rid ires were also swept away. At
Feeds a terrib!e loss of life took
place. At first r.o water appeared,
but a scemim wall of drift wood,
thirty feet high and several hundred
fee i wi le, ap!--ared, sweeping down
the valley at the rate of twenty miles
an hour. A portion of Montague's
Si'k Factory was carried off, with
the brick boarding-house of Captain

Positive Evidence. If the people
needed any further evidence that
Governor G rover is hated by the
Custom House lting, that evidence
is furnished by tho fact that their
papers devote their entire space to
the abuse of him. He is hated by
them because he cannot be used in
the interest of the lting and against

abuse, he will be re-elected on the
first Monday in June, and corruption
will have another check for four
years.

idate voters. "When a certain man,
who we can name if it is denied,

manding tone said: "Nobody allowed

Honest Dick.
Dick has run against a letter at
the Dalles he hardly expected. He
proposed to make capital against
Tim on the Lock question, when
Tim drew a letter from his pocket,
signed and written by B. Goldsmith,
President of the Lock Cqmpany,
which charges Mr. Dick with favor
ing the passage of the bill before
the last Legislature and that he la
bored for the accomplishment of that
end. The Mountaineer says: ' One
circumstance occurred in the discus
sion ou last Monday evening, which
appeared to excite Mr. Williams con
siderably. It was this: Mr. Daven
port said that on a former occasion,
he had charcred Mr. Williams of lob
bying in the last Legislature for the
Bill autorizing the State to purchase
the Canal and Locks at Oregon City
at six hundred thousand dollars;
that his frienas denied the charge
and he had given him the benefit of
the denial. Mr. Davenport said he
would now renew the charge, and
was prepared with the proof to sub
stantiate it. Whereupon Mr. D.
produced a letter from Mr. B. Gold
smith, President of the Lock Com
pany, and read it, which stated that
Mr. Williams favored the passage
of the Lock Bill, and lobbied at the
last Legislature for it. This made
Mr. Williams squirm, and his clos
ing argument was an exhibition of
great excitement.

Pope's candidate for County Clerk,
and because Peter Taquet beat him
for the nomination, they in turn
helped to sinch Peter on the day of
