Pope's familiar lines ought to de
ter our wearers of crinoline from
rushing furiously into the breeches
that seem now to bo open to them, in
the saloon business. It seems from
the thoroughly hardened, and stony
character of conscience, that is
usually met with behind the bar, that
sudden conversions are infrequent,
and therefore it behooves the ladies,
in order to carry out their campaign
successfully, to make calls so nu
merous as to come within the pur
view of those whom Pope had in his
mind's eye, when issuing tho Bull
above referred to. And the old fa
ble, of "Catching a Tartar," must
have come visibly to his pontifical
optics, when composing it. We
therefore, warn the ladies before com
mencing the crusade, of the danger
they incur, lint we urge them to
begin at once, and we earnestly hope
they will so wield the shibboleth of
womanly unction as to bring to sup
plication and surrender, every saloon
keeper in town. In that triumphal
hour our hearts elato with tho victory-
you havo accomplished, and
swelling witli the" gratitude I can
poorly express when the barrels are
rolled into tho street, and their
bungs knocked out, I shall be there
too, with a -bucket. It needs but
earnest work on j our part, and we
'will gather by the river' of this swift
rolling tide of "whisky -smashes."
However, to the "strong-minded"
we would advise : Does your husband
or children tipple to excess? Then,
for the husband, pluck the last rem
nant of hair, "which you have hith
erto overlooked, that clings forlornly
on Ins cranium; if the poker is now
an acute, beat it into an obtuse angle
over his head or, vice versa; after
which, if this treatment should fail,
make home attractive and loving to
him, by kind and wifely administra
tions; banish from the premises what
little of currant, blackberry, or grape
wine you are in the habit of keeping
on hand yourselves, and take the
temperance pledge with him. As
for your children, there stands forth
that particularly strong Bible injunc
tion; "Spare the rod and spoil the
child; and, altogether, tho "woman's
movement" on her children ought to
commence vigorously at home.
It is whispered that one certain saloon-keeper
in town will insist, when
the ladies visit him, that he shall
have a turn about at prayer; so that
when a woman prays for him, he asks
the privilege of praying for the wo
man. He is therefore posting him
self on all the vanities of dross, and
peccadilloes of action, including
"back-biting," and slander, indulged
in by the softer sex, an. lit is calcula
ted there will be a scene when these
things come to pass.
However, speed t!io woman's move
ment. I am interested, and as I do
not keep a still, I can't keep still un
til I see the cohorts of Temperance
moving in solid phalanx and grim
temper, against the common enemy.

Democratic Platform.
The following platform of principles
was adopted by the Democratic State
Convention at Albany last Wednesday
I. We declare our'un faltering dev
tioii to the Constitution of the United
States and to the Union of the States
thereby established, and weatlirm that
the people ot the several .States have
the sole ana exclusive right of govern
ing themselves as free, sovereign and
maepenoeiiL ne, suuject only to the
limitation ot the Constitution, and that
all powers not herein expressly grant
ed to the National Government, are
reserved to the States respectively, and
we denv the right of the Federal' iov
ernment, through the treaty power, to
iKjrinaneiitly domicile Mongolians witti
in anv State without tiie consent of the
legislature thereof.
We atl'n in that the greatest dantrcr
with which we are now threatened? is
the corruption and extravagance which
exists in high official places, and we do
declare as tiie cardinal principle of our
future jolitical action, that retrench
ment, economy and retorm are inioer
itivelv demanded in all the govern
ments of the people, Federal as well as
State and .Municipal, ana we hereby
proclaim ourselves the uncompromis
ing foes of the salary-grab law rin
politicians and land monojoli.sts, wlu
ever they may be and wherever they
may be found, whether they are in or
out'of oilice. and we appeal'to honest
men everywhere, without regard to
past party alliliations, to join us in
branding as they deserve these corrupt
leeches on the body politic and assist
us to purge ollieial .stations of their un
wholesome and baneful presence.
:i. The present Federal Administra
tion, by its utter inabiltty to com pre
bend the dignity or responsibilities of
the duties with which it is charged, bv
its devotion to personal and partisan
interests, by its weak and inconsistent
management of the National nuances,
by its unwarrantable interference with
the local self-government of tiie people
by its support of the corrupt govern
ments which it has imposed by its pow
er upon several States of the Cnion, by
its complicity with corrupt practices
and scandals in various quarters, and
by its appointment of notoriously in
competent men to high official posi
tion, has justly brought upon itself tho
condemnation of the" American people.
4. That th" persistent interference
by Federal officials in local elections,
aiid tho use of lartro sums of money to
defeat the voice of the people through
tho ballot-box, deserves and receives
our severest condemnation.
5. That corporations are t he creations
of law, their franchise and privileges
are granted to subserve tiie public in
terests, and when these arc used, not to
subserve the object of their creation,
but for purt loses of oppression and ex
tortion, we dcelare it to lo the right
and duty of the legislature to control
such corporations.
. Th.it we favor speedy return to
specio payments, ju-t and' -equal taxa
tion for support of Federal and State
governments, and that wo are oi
posed to all discrimination in the as
sessments of Federal revenue for the
purposes of protection.
7. That the free navigation and im
provement of the Columbia river, the
construction of a breakwater at Port
Orford, the improvement of the Co
quille and Willamette rivers, and the
construction of the Portland, Dalles &
Salt Eake R ulroad, are improvements
demanded bv tho commercial inte
rests of this "State, and that the Fede
ral Government ought by all proper
means to assist these measures; that
we are in favor of the bill now lefore
Congress, generally knows as the
Portland, Dalles and Salt Eake Rail
road b;II, and we also favor the early
completion of the Oregon and Cali
fornia Railroad to the southern boun
dary of the State.
s." That we disapprove all measures
in the interests of capitalists and mo
nopolies against labor, believing that
distinctions, if distinctions lie made,
should be in favor of the laboring
( lass who constitute the mass of our
citizens, the producers of the wealth
and prosperity of our country. Wo
therefore approve of the declared prin
ciples, and sympathize with theavow
ecl object of the organization known as
th" Pat roils of Husbandry, and with
those of all other orders having for
their object retrenchment and reform
in public affairs, and the social ad
vancement of the people; that we are
opposed to a monopoly in the publica
tion and sale of books used in the com
mon schools of this State, and we
iro
m tavor ot amenuin tin; existing laws
ih relation to such, s- as to take away
from the publishers of tho Paeitlc
Coast series of readers and spellers the
spo iil privileges in relation thereto
which they now enjoy.
!. Tli itWcare in favor of tree trade
and direct taxation.
10. That the act relating to the fees
of sheriffs and clerks ought to be so
amended either by making such olli
ces salaried, or by reducing tho ices
now attached to tin same, as shall
make the compensation received by
such ollicers a fair remuneration and
nothing more for the services required
of them. That the Constitution be so
amended that all printing for the State
:1'ter the expiration of the term of tho
State Printer in oilice, when such
amendment is passed, shall be provi
ded for by letting the same to the low
est responsible bidder. That we are in
favor of the repeal of the Litigant Act.
11. That the only legitimate object
of government is tiie protection of its
citizens in their lives, liberty and prop
erty, and the pursuit of happiness ;
that to accomplish this end direct
means only should be resorted to ; that
the good resulting from a departure
froni this rule is temporary, tiie evil
lasting. We are, therefore, opposed to
the State engaging in tho purchase,
leasing or speculating in pniertv of
any kind, except such only as is nec
essary for conducting th; ordinary
functions of the Government.
12. That we favortheiinmediato con
struction of a good and serviceable
wagon road along the south bank of
the Columbia river, from the mouth of
