MrsT Cct Down t.l; Taiuff. An
exchange ha the following sensible
remarks of the increase of taxation.
It says: "The people should re
member that, under no possible, rev
enue exigency of the United States is
it necessary to impose a tax upon tea
or eoilee, or a l additional one upon
whisky and tobacco. If we must
have more money under the tarilf, all
that is necessary to raise it is to re
duce the tariff on iron, cotton, and
woolen manufatures about one-half.
That would increase four-fold the
revenue upon these articles, which
are now, on account of a protective
duty, hardly imported. We would
not only raise a great deal more for
the Government, but we would es
cape the imposition of immense taxes
for the benefit simply, of the domes
tic manufacturers. In both events
it would be a great saving. To raise
more money the Government must
cut down the tarilT and not increase
it."
Bomb op . the Chajiges. Th
"Washington correspondent of the
New York Sun, makes the following
damaging charges against Geo. H.
Williams, which may- account to
some extent for the withdrawal of
his name:
It is established by vouchers in
the Department of Justice that on
January 27, 1S72, Attorney General
Williams took fcl,tUU from the con
tingent fund of the department to
pay for a landauletfor his wife; and
mat on July 'SJ, irs, ne took 750
to pay for a pair of carriage horses
to draw this landaulet. In July,
also, he purchased a pair of stitched
pole straps, a gold slip buckle, and
a new silk lining for the landaulet,
and had it varnished and put other
expenses upon it amounting in all
to $211.13. In November and in
December the same carriage was re
paired again at the cost of the De
partment of Justice, out of whose
contingent fund SfSOO was taken for
these repairs. It is also alleged that
the same Attorney General has
bought with $500 from the money of
the contingent fund, but for his pri
vate house, one sidewall glass and
one base table with white marble top.
Moreover, George Wilkenson is car
ried on the rolls of the Department
as a temporary clerk at 670 per
month, and Charles W. Lee as a mes
senger at $C() per month, both of
them being domestic servants of the
Attorney General, and performing
no service whatever for the Depart
ment of Justice by which they- are
paid.
An agreed case was lately made up,
E. Semple, State Printer, vs. Lt. F.
Grover Governor of Oregon, in the
nature of a mandamus, by which K
Semple, as State Printer, claimed
the printing of the newly codified
laws of Oregon, despite the terms of
the act of last session, which provi
ded that the Governor should adver
tise for bids to do the work, and let
the contract to the lowest reponsible
bidder. Semple claims that the law
prescribes that all public printing
shall be done at the State Capital, and
that, as a consequence, so much of
the law providing for the recodifica
tion of the laws as relates to letting
by contract is void. Judge lionham
to whom the case was submitted, de
cided at Chambers on the 2tth inst.,
that the plaintiff is lawfully entitled
to the possession of the manuserip
ted (or authenticated copy thereof)
of such compiled laws, for the pur
pose of printing the same as required
by the Constitution of this State.

It May Come. A Washington dis
patch of the il'2d gives us reason to
hone that the whole rascality in the
Louisiana affair may yet come to
light, from the fact that the thieves
are about to fall out au-ong them
selves. The disnatch savs :
"It is reported that Senator Mor
ton's action in reference to Pinch -eek's
seat in the Senate was based
upon a eot.fession of Pinchbeck him-
.-elf of questionable practices insur
ing his election ly the Louis
iana L 'gislature. Damaging reports
about the election having readied
Morton, he sent for Pinchbeck, who
made a clean breast, whereupon Mor
ton abandoned the policy of seatinv
Pinchbeck on a prim x facie case, an
asked that the matter be carried to
the Committee, on Privileges am
Elections to investigate the conduct
of Pinchbeck. The. latter is said to
be very angry at his treatment, and
threatens damaging disclosures re
garding the operations of Louisiana
politicians. The reason of his courst
is said to be his exclusion from the
henelits and pri i it-ring.
Wiii:x you hear a man say that
this or that person has a clique which
must be broken up, and the person
is a candidate for position, you can
safely calculate that that man wants
a clique organized to foit him into
olEce, and also that he is not the
most popular man in the community.

Pkobable Candidates. E i t li e r
Coll. Van Cleve, of the Albany Rej-
ister. or Wm. 13. Carter, of the Cor-
vallis Gaeette, will probably get the
nomination for State Printer on the
Custom House ticket. They have
both been kept in the traces with
the promise of tbis "fat take," bnt
as there is bnt one to nominate, one
or the other will be disappointed.
There are others who have been
promised the nomination by the Cus
tom House, so that it is tnettv evi
dent somebody will have to take a
back seat.

Two l"oc of Health.
Cold and damp are inimical to health,
ind we generally have an unwholesome
combination of the two at this season,
rhey penetrate the skin and integument
and afTed the muscular, glandular and
nervous organizations, producing rheuma
tism, neuralgia, chills and fever, and where
there is a tendency to dyspepsia or liver
complaint, provoking an attack of indigi-i
ion or billiousness. The best advice that
can be given under such circumstances is
to keep the external si;rfa?e of the body
warmly clothed, and to keep the internal
organs in vigorous working order with the
most wholesome and genial of all tonics.
