the Masons, their families, and a few
invited guests, repaired to Myers'
Hall, where a most bounteous sup
per had beeu prepared. The tables
were litterally crammed with delica

After all had partaken of the supper,
the assemblage dispersed to their
homes. "We here append an extract
of Mr. Chadwick's address, and feel
assured that it will be read by all who
take an interest in the early history
of Masonry on the Pacific Coast with
pleasure. In speaking of the breth
ren who organized Multnomah
Lodge, he said :
"Those brothers who instituted
this Lodge (twenty-five years ago),
were not only strangers to each oth
er at the outset, but adventurers, de
pending upon one another for assist
ance and subsistence, for protection
and safety. lhat active principle
embraced in the importaut Masonic
question which was their constant
studv " here shall we find that
favor, that kindness, that sustaining

led them to fraternal recognition of
each other. This inquiry is ever be
ing propounded in the heart of the
Master Mason. The faithful brother
is looking constantly for the plane
upon which strangers should meet
and make the test of masoiiic broth
erhood. In those davs, in the ab
sence of established society, conven
tionalisms were ignored; every man
went his own wav at everything. Men
were slow to organize, as they had
not fully settled upon their loca
dwelling-place. lleligious persua
sion among them was as strongly
marked as ever political bias was
manifest; still, the necessity for the
adoption of some plan by which all
these sects anil parties could be
brought to a level for social advance
ment and charitable objects, was felt
by our brethren. These adventurers
could make laws unto themselves, in
a provisional way, but such enact
ineiits, in a new and almost uninhab
ited country, had a tendency to create
i dist-r'ist. rather tnan commence,

Juxierience, however, has shown that
.society, even iti its inception, re
quires enactments for the protection
of its faithful members, and to re
st ruin the refractory ; necessary in
ctii.ibrances in the social Compact.
Hat the rule of action to which we
refer, and which was in advance of
all others, was not to he found in the
statute hook. It was a law developed
by masonic culture; engraved on the
heart anil evinced in the lives of its
possessors. It is this law that the
JJrotlier traveler or voyager carries
with him to his place of destination,
often lonely and unknown. Itisthis
law that iiils the iniinl of the Master
Mason with correct and benevolent
purposes. This principle, when em
braced, becomes oneof the strongest
pillars in society. It causes the Mas
ter Masun in the wilderness, in the
desert, upon the plains, at sea, upon
the bleak shore, in prosperity; pov
erty or distress, to ask, "where is my
brother V Masonry cares not for an
tecedents, in an emergency. Her
claims of brotherhood from no con

a good and true man. Her offering
of recognition is a masonic heart and
hand; her never-failing support is a
brother's vow. Fidelity in life; fi
delity in the hour of death; fidelity
to a brother's memory and to those
affected by his loss, after the battle
is over, make up the true Mason.

It is the const ract companion and esti
mable triend of the missionary and the
traveler, on s-a and land, and no one
should travel on our Lakes or rivers with
out. It has been before the public oner thirty
years, and probably has a wider and better
reputation than any othe proprietary med
icine of the yresent day. At this eriod
there are but few unacquainted with the
merits of the Pain-Killer ; but while some
extrol it as a liniment, they know but little
of its power in easing pain when taken in
ternally, while ot tiers use it externally
with great success, but are equally ignorant
of its healing virtues when applied extern
ally. We therefore wish to say to all that
it is equally successful wh"ther used inter
nally or externally, and it stands to-day,
unrivalled by all the great catalogue of
family medicines. It is sufficient evidence
ot its virtues as a standard medicine, to
know that it is now used in all parts of the
world and that its sale is const ant ly in
creasing. No curative agent has had such
wide spread sale or given such universal
satisfaction. It is a purely vegetable com
pound, and perfectly safe in unskillful
hands.
After thirty years, trial, ls stilt receiving
the most unuualifi -d testimonials to its
f virtues, from persons of th highest char
acter and responsibility. Physicians of the
first respectability, recommend it as a most
effectual preparation for the extinction of
pain. It. is not only the best remedy ever
known for Rruises. Cuts. Rums. etc.. but
i for Dysentery fir Cholera or anv sort of
bowel complaint, it is a remedy unsurpass
ed for efficiency and rapidity of action. In
the great cities of India, antl other hot cli
mates, it has become the Standard Medi
cin" for all such complaints, as well as for
for Dsepsia, Liver t 'om plaints, and ot her
kindred disorders. For Coughs and Colds,
Canker. Asthma, and Rheumatic difficul
ties, it has been proved by the most abun-
i dant and convincing testimony to be an in-
