AN OUTLINE OF HIS SpgKCII AS OIVFN
RY THE 'PLAINOEALEH" SrEFCH OF
HON. JOSEPH S. SMITH.
Pursuant to notice eiven.quite a num
lr of the citizes of Douglas county as
sembled at tlie Court House in ltose
burg last Wednesday, to listen to Col
J. W. Nesmith up.on the issues dividing
the two. political parties. Col. Nesmitii
was introduced to the audience by Hon.
L. F. ILane, whose remarks were very
appropriate to the occasion. The Dem
ocratic candidate for Congress imme
diately entered upon his speech after
the conclusion of Mr. Lane's introduc
tory. He began by saying that he was
alone in the canvass through necessity,
and not of his own choice. So far as he
was concerned he preferred always to

! The speaker here drew an apt onipari-
son between tht? marriage feast spoken
j of in the Holy Writ, and ventured the
, opinion that Mr. Sinith.who had as one
i of his excuses for not addressing the
J people that his business would not pcr
j niit the necessary loss of time, would
, discover on the day after the election,
' that they hail left him out of the least
j us were those mentioned in the llible,
who could not go to the marriage feast
I on account of " business." He gave a
j description of the manner in w hich the
j cavotes on the plains kill the magnili

numbe r on this hill, one in this one
here and another there. The first com
mences the chase, ami as soon as .he
Ih-cciiics exhausted a -second takes his
his place, and so on the buffalo, pur
seed until out of hreat, is hamstrung
and devoured by his ravenous pursuers.
This was the policy that had beesi
adopted by the Republican party in
the present campaign. The ca.yotes
were the Federal odice-holders, ami
they proposed to hamstring him if pos
sible ; but ho would give fair warning
now that the lirst cayofe that set him
self upon his track he would turn about
and gore him.
Mr. Nesmith then alluded to the Hi'
ple scandal. So far as hediimself was
concerned, he held that when he be
came a put. lie. ollicial he was to all in
lenls and purposes a public servant,
and his at ts and character public proi
erty. Mr. Hippie was charged wii'h
grave crimes, any of which should
send him to toe Penitentiary, one of
which, and the giaLe.-t of all, was com
mitted in this Si Ue that of bigamy,
as the Republican uarty, in convention
a-sembled, had endorsed Mr. Hippie it
had necessarily endorsed his crimes,
and the resolution of endorsement con
stituted a part of their of that party's
platform. It is not neciKsary for him
tosiythut this resolution w'us a dis
grace to this State; It was not essential
that he should review the Senator's
crimes; the resolution and th(; mis
deeds of Mr. Hi,. pie spoke for them
selves, an t needed no argument on his
part to show up their eiiorm.uy. Jit:
directed attention to the manlier in
which the ad'airs of State were being
administered by the present State Ait.
ministration t)f Oregon. It was his
oi anion, baed upon personal knowl
edge, that never before had tin interest
of the peoj.le of Oregon been in the
ea'v of better, more honest and capable
men than at tie: present time. The
Governor and S eretary of State had
made for themselves a" record d tiring
their term of odice that he would he
nroud to point out as the reult of the
wisdom and integrity of men ot any
political party, hut more so when me
men were Democrats. Tlie same could
be truthfully uttered of the otucor Dem
ocratic oliici'als all of which is in strik
ing eontiast with the reputation of the
oods-Mav administration.
At the end of Mr. Nesniith's .speech,
Hon. Jos. S. Smith was called for. Mr.
Lane, in introducing him, said : " Fel
low eiii.eiiri: allow 'me to introduce to
vou, lion. Joseph Smith, your'late Hej
resentative, who, during the time he
was in C ingress, represented you with
honor and iidcliiy,a'iid won for himself
the distinct ion of 'out: of Oregon's a blest
Congressmen." Mr. Smith said he
could not make a speech, fie was an
invalid, traveling with the hoje of bet
tering ids health.and it was an accident
that he was in that room to-day. He
had always experienced a feeling of
gratitude to the people of Douglas
county for the warm support they gave
him when he was a candidate for Con
gress. Ue had never an opportunity
to express his thanks to them before;
this was the iirt time ami it would lie
the last. He wool I say one word con
cerning Mr. Nesmith and the Demo
cratic platlorm, and that was he fully
endorsed both. He hail known Mr.
Nesmith for thirty years; they came to
Oregon together, "When they were
n;ei li.iiiics, laboring daily at the same
can (enter's bench, and he had honored
ami 'respected him now ; time had not
changed the good opinion he hail form
ed of him from the first. If elected,
and he felt suit? he would by an over
whelming majority, the people would
send in him a' Representative to Con
gress would lie watchful of their inteiv
ests, and represent them in an able and
ellicient maimer.
The meeting throughout was very
enthusiastic, and both speakers were
very frequently applauded.

Hon. J. W Nesmitb has received
the nomination of the Democratic
Convention in Oregon, for Congress
for the unexpired term of Joseph G.
Wilson, deceased. As Senator from
Oregon for six years, Col. Nesmith
was generally acknowledged to be
both useful and faithful to the in
terest of his State, acting entirely :
inuepencieui ui party, and never
having his name associated with jobs
or rings. Col. Nesmith is a cousin
and Senator Kelly is a brother-in-law
of the late Congressman from that
State. Seattle I)i.patc7t .
The so-called llepubliean nominee
for Congress is making the cam

to do it here, and he did it to the
