Corporate Power.
It is a noteworthy fact that the
Radical journals srenerallv endeavor
to discourse the fanner's move-
!
, raent, while the Democratic papers i
as generally regard it with favor. I
i Instinctively the one partv from the
first frowned upon it, while the other
j endorsed it. This is easily account- j of Vl,.a Estate, Groceries, General Mer
: ed for. "While, tlie Iladictl party chandisc and Horse s.
j lavs always represented the combined
wealth of the country, and found
4, - . .i -i-,
therein its support, the Democratic
party represented the poor man ami
the laborer, the mechanic and ti e
fjrriculturist. and l..ted theit-upo:i
i its claims to the public favor. 1 ro:n
i its formation tlie Democratic or- !
ganization has fought for the rights
I of lal.or, for the unrestricted fiee
I clom of the men whose sweat fertil
ized and enriched the country and
developed its productive capacity.
It has not warred against wealth,
hut a-aiust the tyranny of a-grea-ted
wealth. It has not made itself
the propaganda of airrariaism, hut
th- toe of niutoeracv. It has not
I. ."h.t vnetion of car'ital.l
nor" the demolition of the results of
in.'nstrv hut it lias contended for
the largest opjiortunity for the indus
trial, interest to avail itself of the fruits
of its own toil. Thus it has always
been found advocating reasonable
hours of labor and the payment of
just wages to the working man. It
has never aHeeted to despise the
rich man because of his wealth,
since to do so were not -consist nit
with its friendship for the poor man,
whose desire is to better his condi
tion and become wealthy if he can;
but it has striven to lhake labor so
free and untrammeled as to render it
possible for all men, by the exercise
of industry and 2i-ndence, to achieve
a competence.
This is the position of the Dem
ocrat ie party. Invoking no cause
less antagonism between Capital a d
Labor, its purpose has been to make
these two great powers of society
pull together in kindness and. unison;
t ) bring about just relations between
the omplo ers and employed. This
is why it has been ever tlie foe of
special privileges. This is why it
lias always been found ranged
against tlie monopolies. This is.
why it is found in sympathy with
tin; agricultural class in their posi
tion in regard to tariffs, radroads,
and so forth. Necessarily, then, the
farmers must be allied with the
Democracy. All the reforms that
the ( I ranges and kindred associa
tions are seeking to encompass, have
been sought by the Democratic par
ty. 15efore that party lost power,
the laboring- interests, the farmers,
and all who depended on individual
exertion for their subsistence, had
no cause of complaint: there were
