faithfully and with honor and credit

Buildings. Not withstanding the cry
of hard times this .summer, there is as
much building going on in thi.s place
as there has for many vears past, if not
more. Messrs. C. W? Pojie A Co. are
preparing to erect a fine brick store;
Mrs. M. M. Charnian is erecting a line
residence, and a new store buildinir
has been erected by Mr. S. J. MeDoii-
aiu.
Warm Vkatiier. The weather has
been delightful during the nast week
for the fanners, and all that is neees- 1
sary is, that it continue so for a few
weeks, anil Oregon will show to the
world that she can produce larger
crops than any part of the world.

day on a tour of inspection to Tacoma,
the railroad terminus. They will see

fell and broke her arm this week. Dr.
Xorris was culled and set the broken
limb and the little sufferer is doing as

School. Prof. S. I). Pope opened his

were in attendance over twenty-five
scholars and a prospect of a materi
al increase.

Washington Territory. Our young
men must have been sleeping on their

A Washington dispatch says that
the. Treasury JVjJartment has pre
pared a detailed statement, showing
the final settlement of paymaster
Hodge's defalcation. After deduct
ing what was realized from the sale of
his property, there remains as a total
loss to the Government, 81b'J,06'.
The bonds which were given by
Hodge at different times, were four
in number, for S20,b00 each; but one
of them does not cover the period of
defalcation, and it is not expected
that the Government will be able to
recover anything on any of the bonds
it holds. It now comes out that
after the indictment of Polomus and
Jackson, New York brokers for
Hodge, had been drawn, that firm
j wrote, saying that they were ready to
compromise. No further steps, how
j ever, were taken, either in the way
ot prosecution, or to enforce a com
promise, jind shortly afterward an
order was given to dismiss the case.
John Bingham's appointmt nt as
minister to Japan is not received with
much favor by the Piepubliean papers
of Ohio. He is not only a high sal
ary 31. C, but a Credit Mobiilerite
and a wiley old fox of tiie Judiciary
Committee. He lias the reputation
suppressing many wholesome meas
ures in his committee, not very cred
itable to the integrity of a fair min
ded man. It would be about as well
to shelve men of his style, if reforms
are to be the order of the party; that
is what the people of his district
tuouh when they refused to re-elect
him to Congress, and tliev are not
pleased to see him picked hp for an
important position, after losing the
confidence of his constitiients and
the people generally. Other men,
lerhap.s not as sharp lawyers as
Innghain, are quite as .safe to be
trusted in high places.

presently, a party founding itself up
on equal rights and local self-govern-nienf,

permanent in the Jeffersonian tra

people are getting tired of the expen
sive administration of Graot & Co.

During the war and since its close
it appears the American people have
gone into uebt deeper and deeper,
not apparently realizing the fact that
pay day must come sooner or later,
and that the consumers and produc
ers are paying heavy interest on these
debts to rich lords. This system of ex
travagance is particularly noticeable
in large Radical cities. ' The state
ment is made that the city of Phila
phia is in debt the sum of 858,000,
000. New York City, which was
heavily in debt when the lladieals
got into power through the stealings
of Tweed and his crowd of thieves,
now proposes to increase its actual
indebtedness, with bonds, from 110,-
000,000 to 450,000,000
The truth
of the matter is, that the American
people have become too extravagant
through the demoralizing influences
of of a circulating medium which in
reality has no value whatever, and
the officials have lost all idea of our
former simplicity and economy.
Extravagance and dishonesty are visi
ble at every hand, and unless the
people will take a step backward, the
people will ere long witness a nation
of bankrupts.
Not a Defaultli:. A "Washington
dispatch s-ays that the deficit of 21,
000 charged against Jacob Thomp
son, Secretary of the Interior under
Buchanan's administration, is ex
plained by the statement that that
amount of Indian trust bonds was
abstracted by one Goddard Bailey a
clerk in the Department of the In
terior. The deficit, though charged
to Thompson's account, is carried
from year to year in the accounts of
the Secretary of the Interior, With
this explanation Mr. Thompson might
be regarded as a defaulter, which
he is not.
"And so we go," says the Phil
adelphia Press, "from bad to worse.
Where are we likelv to halt?" And
in answer the Jouisville Loiouer
Junriial thus: We reallv don't like
to mention the place, but there can be
be no harm in saying that the cockney

sides of sufficient length to include one
halt acre of land, the centre of which shall
be the exact center of paid saw mill ; said
land being a portion of the northeast of
section l.'J, in township 3 south, range 2
east, of Willamette meridian, in Clacka
mas county. State of Oregon; and to fur

mentioned judgment and decree in favor
of 1). 14. Hannah, I have levied upon Us
