Col. Teal's Address.
From the Benton Dc-inocrat.
At the request of tlio lionton
County Farmers' Club, Col. Joseph
Teal addressed that hodv, on Satur
day last, in a most earnest and elo-
qrient manner. e are nnaine to
j."ive more than a faint outline of lii.s
speech. He had just arrived from
O his farm, and was proud to meet so
many honest tillers of the soil. As
one of the largest holders in the
canal and lucks and the Willamette
Transportation Company; as a farm
er and stock raiser; as one who ever
labored for the interests of his adop
ted home, his whole heart was with
the people of Oregon. For years
the farmer had been the abject slave
of the speculator and the public car
rier, but now the period of his thral
dom had elided: the shackles which
had so long bowed down as hewers
.f wood ami drawers of water the
honest veomanrv of this noble State
had been stricken from their limbs,
and they could stand forth, beneath
the a-gis of an honest, liberal cor
poration, and reap a just recompense
tor their hardy toil. Some people
q looked upon him as a speculator;
but the company he represented had
q proved its honest intents by placing
freight taint's at a fair, equable, liv
Qng rate, and releasing the producer
from the grinding oppression of a
soulless monopoly. This company
had consummated one of the most
gigantic enterprises ,f the present

ray no attention to slanders of
gossip-mongers. Keep straight on
in your course, and let their back
biting die of neglect. What is the
use of lying awake nights, brooding
over the remarks of some false friend,
that runs through your brain like
forked lightning?
What's the use of getting into a
worry, and fret over gossip that has
Leenset atio.-it to vour disadvantage
y some meddlesome busybody, wlio
has more time than character?
These things don't possibly injure
you. unless, indeed, you take notice
of thorn and in combating them, give
them character and standing. If
what is said about you is true, set
yourself right at once; if it is false
let it go for what it will fetch.
If a bee stints von, would you go
to the hive and destroy it? Would
not a thousand come upon you?
It is wisdom to say little replacing
the injuries you have received.
We are generally losers in the end
if we stop to refute all the backbit-
I ings and gos-d pings we may hear by
I the wav. They are annoying, it is
true, but not dmigerous so long as
we do not expostulate and scold.

turns and i)unoses, and not by I
