Five Steps to the Gvnnows. A
man had committed murder, was
tried, found guilty, and condemned
to be hanged. A few days before

How it Pays. A New Jersey edit
or has been doing some close figuring
on the Congressional back pay busi
ness, and has come to the following
conclusions:
The late session commenced on the
2d of December and ended on the 4th
of March, a period of ninety-two days.
Thirteen Sundays intervened, and
both houses adjourned over from the
'22.1 of December to the (Jth day of
January, which included twelve work
ing davs. Thus the actual number
of days was reduced to sixty-seven.
At the rate of .r?7, "(!() per annum that
the members received, it will be seen
that the pay of each amounted, to
more than .1 11.10 per day. Xow, it
is si.f i to say that the average number
id hours they were m session did not
exceed live per day, so that each
member received !r22.22 per hour, or
a little over 'J7 cents per minute,
