A Terrible Calamity to our City.
Au Institution of the State . Swept
Away by l'ire.
SIHO.OOO Worth Property Dcstrosed.
At twenty minuted before three o'clock
last .Saturday morning, our citizens were
awakened from their slumbers by the
ringing the of th bells and '.be cry of
fire. The people were soon out, and it
was easy to observe what tbe cause of the
alarm was and from whence it came.
Tbe Oregon City "Woolen Mills were in
flames. The Ore caught in the attic, and
spread with great rapidity, and before any
person was scarcely on tbe ground, the
entire upper story of the building was in
flames. Tbe fireman were Boon at work,
but it was apparent to all that tbe noble
structure with its valuable machinery
would be destroyed and that no human
efforts could save them.
ThPie are various reports as to how the
tiro originated, and who was tbe first on.
the ground, But we will give the facts
as we have reason to believe they are.
One report stales that the building was
set on fire. To this report we a first
gave considerable credit, but after due
reflection and considering the amount of
combustible material around such an es
tablisnient. we have concluded 1 li.it it was
caused by spontaneous combustion, and
tho material in the a'lic being very dry
and considerable oil about the wood
work, was the cause of tbe. rapid spread
of the devouring flames. We are inform
ed that Mr. Dan. Lee, lh. night-watchman
on the wharf was the first to observe the
Amies, and lie rushed around to the
factory giving the alarm as he was run
ning. He then attempted to gain au en
trance to t he building, but failed. The
factory waichtn an says that he had pre
viously discovered the fire, and was up in
the third srory endeavoring to apfiiiige the I
hose in order to put it out. Mr. Theodore
C:atk was 'lie fii!t who rang the fire
alarm bell, and at Ihe same time the fac
tory bell was rung two or three strokes,
but the watchman says that the rope was
cut. and he was un.ibie to ring any more,
when be left for the engine room to turn
on the water. While was going on.
the flames maderapi I progress. Ano r
report conies that the wotktnen on the
locks were the fir-t to observe the fire,
and when they saw it. it was in the south
end of the building near where the woi 1
pieker was stationed. This report cor
reponds with many others, at id !.. nee we
are of the opinion that it caught from
some material around tbe wool picker.
The question as to whether the fire was an
acci lent or the woik of an incendiary,
will always be one of difference. But
what makes us doubt that it was set on
fire, is the fact that it occurred in the a' lie.
We cannot comprehend why a person
would go up that high when there was
just as good opnoriimi'y on the first floor
a.'! v.-1 '; h would have probably resulted
more damaging.
xor.r.E wonr. hone.
From the commencement of Ihe fire,
the firemen and citizens did all in their
power to safe the building and surround
in? property. The fact was beyond
doubt that the factory must go. and tin
next step was to prevent its spreading to
adjoining buildings. This was done by
almost supeihuman efforts on the part of
the people and firemen. The engine Rtid
dry house, which wete located within
twen'y feet of the factory, constructed ol
wood. Furrounded by wood and other ig
niTbie mateiial. 1 iie Cliff andrhecnix
Hotels, directly opposite the factory also
narrowly escaped. The way our firemen
anil citizens worKed snowed ln.it no
ordinary fire could have gained headway.
anl had tin alarm been given before th
entire upper story was in flame, we have
every reason to believe that the factory
would have been saved with but sliirht

The walls of the Ouilding are standing
and we understand that only one of tbeift
will have to be rebuilt, in the north wall,
which partiallv tumbled down and is bad
ly cracked. Tbe dry bouse and wool

worth of wool, wi'h a large amount, of
wood were saved. The property of the
Company thus ssved is worth probably
