ranging at the mills, delivered. is 70 cents,
and on the river f') rents. There is prob
ably but little hope for the price going

W'e are able to state the facts alluded
to above with exactness, and we think it
our duty to do so. While sojourning at
Washington iu IS(;7. we met a gentleman
who was an officer in that resiment at the
time referred to. Its command. -r was
olonel, afterwards general. Lucbanan.
who commanded at Xew Orleans for some
time during the war. The '-captain" re
terred to was Lieutenant S. Grant His
dissipation was shocking and perpetir.il,
and fianally culminated, at a public din
ner of the officers, in an offense name
less here so flagrant and revolting that
Col. Duchanan gave to Grant the alterna
tive of resignation or a court-martial.
Of course he preferred the former, and
resigned, as affirmed above. The colonel
agreed to hold it until Grant got drunk,
again, which was very soon, and it was
then forwarded to the department. Our
informant says that Grant left the camp,
and lived for some time in a most abject
degradation among the neighboring In
diaus. Then he went to San Francisco
and opened a billiard saloon, which he
kept till Le "run himself out,' when he
sailed for Xew York. Xow let us meet
him in Xew York: He arrived without a
dollar. He sent to an officer in command
of the harbor and we have this from
that officer's own lips to con e to the city
and meet hiai. He did so, and supplied
him with money to reach his wife's
friends in Missouri, and not one cent of
the money was ever refunded. His ca
reer in Missouri, while living on the farm
with his father-in-law, was simply awful.

to be true in regard to it. We
