troublea at Long Island City about the
reading of the bible in the public schools
has finally brought a decision from the
State Superintendent of Public Instruc
tion. He lays it down as the established
principle in this State, that public school
teachers have no right to compel attend
ance upon any religious exercises. They
may holt' such exercises in connection
with the school but the attendance is to
be voluntary, or at the discretion of nr.

demanded that it should be re-en acted,
