What Cassias M Clay Thinks of
Grant and Radicalism-
o
In a letter to the Liberal Repub
lican Convention that recently met
in Jefferson City, Cassias M. Clay,
of Kentucky, one of the oldest and
ablest Abolitionists of the country,
indorses the Liberal movement, and
thus speaks of Grant and the pres-
ent Radical party :
"Slavery being dead, I resist
"with the spme earnestness that I
did its existence the attempt of the
Grant conspirators to subjugate the
South; and to make us provincial
for all time to a more than Roman
imperialism.
I denounce the attempt to weak
en us by a studied policy of array
ing the blacks against the
whites. I denounce the design of
barbarizing us, by the corrupt and
irresponsible rule of men from the
North, who have no common inter
est in our affairs, who divide our
people and waste our substance.
I denounce the attempt to re
verse the natural order of things,
by subjecting, by constitutional
xjchanges and ingeniously contrived
laws, the intelligence and property
of the South to Ignorance and pau
perism. 0I denounce the enmity of the
Grant rule to the independence of
Cuba; because they know that
Cuba must in interest finally grav
itate toward and belong to the
South.
I denounce the union of the pow
ers of the executive, judicial, and
legislative department in the mili
tary head of the nation.
I denounce the nepotism, favor
itism, and corruption and proscrip
tion of the Grant Administration.
I denounce the scheme of sub
jecting men and measures to the
end otW-electing a military chief
o tain.
'"And last and above all, I protest
acranst the unconstitutional and
despotic interference with the right
of peaceable assemblages of the
people and the ballot-box, by the
frequent and alarming use of the
cartridge box.
The renomination and re-election
of Grant is to consolidate all these
usurpations and abuses, and open
up a highway to the overthrow of
all of our liberties.

Droz, a mechanic of Geneva, pro
duced a clock which excelled all
others in ingenuity. On it were
seated a negro, a shepherd, and a
dog. When the clock struck, the
shepherd played six tunes on his
flute, and the dog approached and
fawned upon him. This wonder
ful machine was exhibited to the
King of Spain, who was greatly
delighted over it.
"The gentleness of my dog,"
said Droz, "is his least merit. Jf
your Majesty touch one of the ap
ples which you see in the Shep-
g herd's basket, you will admire the
animal s fidelity.

dog Hew at his hand, barking so
loud that the King's dog, which
was in the room, began to bark al
so. At this the courtiers, not doubt
ing thatoit was an affair of witch
cratt, hastily left the room, cross
ing themselves as they departe.l.
Having desired the .Minister of
Marine (the only one who ventur
ed to remain) to ask the negro what
o'clock it was, the Minister did so,
but obtained no reply. Droz then
observed that the negro had not
Cyet learned Spanish, upon which
Gthe question was repeated in
French, when the black immediate
ly answered him. At this prodigy
the firmness of the Minister also
cibrsook him, and he retreated pre
cipitately, declaring that it must be
the work of a supernatural being.

Cady Stanton publishes the follow
ing interesting family remiscence:
''There was no head in my moth
er's family. I remember once my
little sister swallo .ved a leaden bul
let. Mv lather, being a timid man-
hid his face that he mijht not wit
ness the sufferings of his child.
My mother took her daughter by
the heels, and shook the missile
from her throat. If she had wait
ed for the head of the family to
have acted she would have lost her
child."
Mrs. Stanton overestimates the
danger to which her little sister
was subjected. If the bullet was
non-explosive it could have work
ed no harm, and the life of the suf
ferer might have been preserved
without resorting to the unseemly
feme ly of inversion and shakiii"
Sorinow is the heir-loom of all;
thegreat heritage of human kind.
Not a sun sets in the west that
does not see rising from the earth
a mist of tears. Not a bright
smile gleams on the human face
thftt is not intermingled with the
shadow of fear, of trouble or sor
row. This sorrow, this common
heritage, we may depend upon it,
is felt in royal palaces, in noble
halls, as well as looking up from
the damp cellar, below 'the street
or looking down from the wretched
garret that is above. The royal
mother feels when she loses her
first born as keenly as the poorest
beggar woman. There is a dead
level on which humanity lies: and
if you can disrobe the greatest no
ble and take his rags off the most
wretched beggar, you will find
there is the same human heart and
the same immortal soul in both,
lost by Bin, and needing equality
to be saved by grace.
A Sad Spectacle. The Peoria
Jleview prints this plain story :
"Springfield has just had a sensa
tion. A former State official, and
a man who has occupied high posi
tions, not only in the common
wealth, but in the nation, lias been
on a prolonge'spree for some days
in her classic precincts. On Friday
he visited Bunn's banking house,
and demanded $50. It was refused
him, whereupon he abused the tel
ler like a pickpocket, and had to be
ejected. lie visited a saloon and
asked for a drink of whisky. The
wbar-tender told him he had none,
whereupon he grew so violent that
he had to be put out by force.
Drunken, friendless, and an out
castsuch is the fate of one who
aspired to be President of the Un
ited States. lie is now a perfect
wreck, and even his friends have
come to the conclusion that the
only service he can render is to die.
Falsk Delicacy. Above every
other feature that adorns the fe
male character, delicacy stands
foremost within the province of
good taste. Not that delicacy
which is perpetually in quest of
something to be ashamed cf, which
makes merit of a blush, and sim
pers at the false construction its
own ingenuity has put upon an in
ocent remark; this spurious kind
of delicacy is far removed from
good feeling and good sense; but
the high minded delicacy which
maintains its pure and undeviating
walk alike among women as in the
societr of men, which shrinks from
no necessary! uty, and can spak
when required with seriousness
of things at which it would be
ashamed to smile or to blush.
A Sad Cask of Ixsaxity.
About six months ago the bark
Live Yankee sailed from Portland,
and has never been heard from.
It is supposed she was wrecked and
her passengers and crew lost. A
woman named Kuphemia Creary
had a husband on board, and she
has been rendered insane by his
loss. She Stoutly maintains that
he is ali"e and constantly in her
sight, but that he is kept from her.
She thinks she sees him trying to
reach her, but some unseen force
holds him back. This idea has be
come a monomania with her, and
she thinks of nothing else. She
was yesterday examined by the
Commissioners of Insanity and or
dered sent to Stocton. Jhdleiin

A Loathsome Fraud. The duel
between Speaker Carter, of Louis
iana 1 egislature chain-gang, and
Police Superintendent Badger, of
New Orleans, says the Cwca.sia)t,
is justly pronounced a disgusting
farce. Any combat between a
Southern preacher and a Yankee
vagabond, in which both are not
exterminated, is a loathsome fraud
upon an injured people.
"What shall I do to get warm?
asked a fashionably attired lady of
a Quaker who was riding in a car
riage with her, at the same time
shivering in her lace shawl and pro
fusion of jewelry. 'I don't know,'
replied the Quaker, solemnly, 'un
less thee puts on another breast
pin !'

Buhtin, of January Lit, (A recent
date.;
Cail Martins recently died in CievehMf,
Ohio, from eating meat intected with the
Oca of Tana a- Solium. At the Coroner's
Inquest, on Tuesday, (January 2d.) it was
shown that three weeks before Christmas,
Mai tins purchased a carcass of Pork. Some
of the meet was eaten the same day, nnd
some was made into sau-age. About ten
days later, some of the sausage was eaten,
and in a Vhost time the whol i family were
taken siek. Martins died "ii Sunday, Decem
ber 31st, IS71. Mrs. Martins and her two
Children are now very sick, and the fomer is
not likel t recover. The veniict was in
accordance with the facts. For further par
ticulars., e Cleveland, Hiio, papers of above
date.' A Coroner's inquest brought this
fact to light.

Bergh exh'bited to us a number ot parasites
which had been removed from persons af
flkte.l; there were several ddlerent species,
one of which appears to be entirely unknown
to the medical profession. This new taenia
is shaped something like an orange seed,
but perfectly Hat, or lather like a c teumher
seed, with a tail about a quarter of an inch
inlergth. Another was a tape worm S7
diet in length, consisting of y.fitjo joints.
Among medical men there exists no little
difference of opinion relative totheoiigin
of these entozoa. One class of writers be
lieve that these parasites, at least many of
them, originate in the endowment of ant nal
molecules with vitality from the parent body,
favored by certain st ites ot the vital forces
of that body; the states originating yieir
organization and promoting their growth
and propagation. That all description of
e itozoa are met with far more frequently
where animal food is used in greatest abund
ance, is an indisputable tact, especially
where tSe food is the flesh of the "unclean
beasts," ahich the Jews and Mohammedans
are lorbkhlen to partake of. Rut our inten
