THE CSK15AT WOUSIUP
ST JOilS G. WlTHTIKlt.
Tbe Larp at nature's advent strtung
Has never ceased to play ;
The song the stars of morning sung
Has never died away.
And prayer 13 made and praise is given,
13y all things near and fa?;
The ocean looketh up to heaven,
And minora every star.
Its waves are kneeling on the strand,
As kneels the bumble knee.
Their white locks bowing to lh.e sand,
The priesthood of the seal
They pour their glittering treasures forth,
Their gifts of pearl they bring,
And all the listening hills &f earth
Take up the song they sing.
Tbe green earth scuds her incense up
From, many a mountain shrine;
From- folded k?at and dewy cup
She pours ber sacred wine.
The mists above the morning rills
Rise white as wings of prayer ;
The alter curtains of the hills
Are sunset's purple air.
The winds with hymns of praise are loud.
Or low with sobs of pain;
The thunder-organ of the cloud,
The drooping tears of vuia.
TYith drooping head, and branches crossed.
The twilight forest grieves.
Or speaks with tongues of l'entecost
o
o
ij ions all its sunlit leaves.
The blue sky is the temple's arch,
Its transept earth and air ;
The music of its starry march,
The chorus of its prayer.
So nature keeps the reverent" frame,
G With which her ears began,
And all her signs and voices shame
The-prayerless heart of man.

Woman's Rights in Practice.
A lamentable state of tilings ex
ists in Wyoming Territory, savsS
the Washington Patriot, where
women are accepted ns jurors as
well as voters. -Recently a man
was tried for his life for murder
before a jury which included three
women married in its number.
On the third day, when all the tes
timony was nearly in, one of the
females became ill and was excus
ed. Another juror was sworn and
all the testimony had to be taken
over again for "the benefit of tho
rew juror. Finally, after a week's
labor, and at cost of 81,000 to tho
county, the prisoner was declared
guilty of murder in the first de
gree. At this juncture, however,
it was for the lirst time discovered
that one of the females who had
sat on the jury was not a citizen
of the United States, of which
fact the gallantry and modest' of
tho counsel for the prosecution,
who hesitated to ask impertinent
questions of the ladies, had kept
him in ignorance. It now became
necessary to order a new trial,
but the unhappy prisoner request
ed to be allowed to plead guilty to
murder in the second degree, and
be punished with imprisoinent for
life, rather than undergo another
trial before a female jury. The re
quest of the culprit was granted
by the Court, and so the legal farce
ended. These were the curious ju
o
0
dical leatures ot the case; but who
can estimate at their proper valua
tion the unnatural social and do
mestic incidents connected with it?
The incarceration for seven succes
sive days of the jury, under the
fatherly and refined charge of the
SherilV; the muttered curses and
loud complaints of the deserted
Rusbands and outcries of their
bawling children as they daily be
sieged the court-room to catch a
glimpse, however evanescent, of
the neglectful wives and mothers ?
Who? but no; let us forbear.
The theme is too painful for us to
linger upon it.
Blackmailing the Merchants
o It costs something to be an hon
est man in the New York Custom
house under Radical administra
tion. In fact, honest is next to
impossible under the prevailing
system, and only rogues and rogu
ery can thrive. On this point read
the following from the testimony
of Mr. John C. Hopper, secretary
of the national Revenue Reform
Association:
Senator Ravard, Have vou found
that the merchants of this citv
suller such an amount of intimida
tion that, although they are will
ing to have the facts brought be
fore the committee, they do not
desire to be themselves known ?
A. That is so, sir.
Q. Have any reason to believe
that exists to any considerable ex
tent ?
O A. At the commencememt of the
sittings ot the committee it was
entirely so; but they are taking
courage, and if you s"it here two or
three weeks longer I think they
will come forward.
(.J. -You were in the appraisers
department once?
- v. i os, sir.
4 X
o
Q. Why were you removed ?
A. I was not removed, I was
legislated out of office. I took no
tice of a very grave immorality
in the office, which was the at
tempted passing of 110 boxes, and
bales, and ebundles, which thev
wanted me to pass without exam
ination, and I declined to doit 1-
Gcause it was contrary to law ; Mr
McCulloch sent on a special agent,
and he sustained me - anil said I
was right about it ; but I was leg
islated out of office, and didiFt
pay any iurther attention to it
In other words, the witness was
an honest man, and determined to
do his duty, therefore he was
islated out of officer' AT J" jjT

The Free-Trade Question-
The exhibit made by the leather
manufacturers, says the Patriot, be
fore, the Committee of Ways and
Means will, when properly correct
ed and restated, show by their ou:n
evidence that they do not need pro
tection. The leather manufatures
of the country, as set forth in Mr.
Wells' report of 18G9, are worth
over $200,000,000, and give em
ployment to 180,000 hands. The
weekly wages paid these hands av
erage 11, "(not -si 7, as represented
to the committee, very unfairly, by
taking only the wages paid fine
workmen and finishers.) The week
ly wages conceded to be paid
abroad average $5, so that those
wages are five-elevenths of the
wages -paid here. The contribu
tion of labor to the cost of leather
manufactures is just forty-five per
cent. Hence, the advantage of
foreign goods over domestic in re
spect of labor is five elevenths of
forty-five, or, twenty and five
elevenths per cent. Rut the tariff
imposes an average additional cost
often per cent, on leather goods of
all kinds, (see Mr. Wells' tables;)
let the articles employed in leather
manufactures come in duty free,
then, ami the difference in favor of
foreign labor in leather would be
only ten and five-tenths percent,
which would not begin to pay the
freight, interest, port charges, and
other costs of importation. There
fore, what the leather manufactur
ers need is not protection from for
eign competition, but only free
trade in their own material.
A Widow's Wjles. They tell
about a blooming young widow in
Derby who used to live next door
to Mr. Smith, who was a widower
and a timid man, whose mild eyes
beamed blandly through his spec
tacles. The widow had a kind
ness for Smith, and he reciprocat
ed; but he had hardly enough cour
age to carry on the campaign. So
at last the widow pretended to be
terribly afraid of thunder and
lightning, and whenever she saw a
gust coming up, she used to
smooth her hair and rush into Mr.
Smith's house. Then when ehe
heard a peal of thunder, she would
scream and rush up and throw her
arms around the neck of the mild
eyed Smith, and implore him to
protect her, and Smith always
looked embarrassed and anxious,
and said he would. Then she
would faint, and Smith wovdd feel
half glad and half sorry. About
six thunder-storms settled the bus
iness, and now she is Mrs. Smith
he is only sorry that her apprehen
sions of the lightning were not re
alized. He says that if there ever
was a woman who ought to have
been torn to pieces by electricity,
it is that widow. She has thnder
storms now every day in Smith's
house, and it is very lively and
vigorous for Smith all around her.
o o-
Sacuedxess of Marriage.
For the man and woman who pure
ly and truly love each other, ami
guided by the law of justice, mar
riage is not a state of bondage.
Indeed,' it is only when they be
come by this outward acknowl
edgment publicly avowed lovers,
that freedom is realized by them
in its full significance. Thereafter
they can be openly devoted to
each other's interests, and avowed
ly intimate and chosen friends.
Together they can plan life's bat
tle, and enter upon the path of
progress that ends not with life's
eventide. Together they can seek
the -charmed avenue of culture,
and, strengthened by each other,
can brave the world's frown in the
rugged but heaven-lit path of re
form. Home, with all that is dear
est in the sacred name, is their
peaceful and cherished retreat,
within whose sanctuary bloom the
virtues that make it a temple of
benificence.

May he Interesting. When
Gen. Washington was on Dorches

Cherry Pectoral,
For Diseases of tha Throat and Lungs
such as Coughs, Colds, Whooping
Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma,
and Consumption.
Among the great
discoveries of modern
science, few are of
more real value to
mankind than thi,s ef
fectual remedy for all
diseases cf the Throat
and Lungs. A vast
trial of its virtues,,
throughout this and
other countries, has
shown that it doei
surely and effectually
control them. The testimony of our best citi
zens, of all classes, establishes the fact, that
Chekry Pkctokal wUl and does relieve and
cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and
Lungs beyond any other medicine. The most
dangerous affect idiis of the Pulmonary Organs
yield to its power; and cases of Consump
tion, cured by this preparation, are public
ly known, so remarkable as hardly to be be
lieved, were they not proven bevoud dispute.
As a remedy it is adequate, on which the publio
may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs,
the forerunners of more serious disease, it saves
unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering
not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con
vinces tho most sceptical. Every family should
keep it on hand as a protection against tlie early
and unpercoived attack of Pulmonary Affections,
whLcvh ard easily met at first, but which become
incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten
der lungs need this defence ; and it is unwise to
be without it. As a safeguard to children, amid,
the distressing diseases which beset the Throat
and Chest of childhood, Chekry Pectosal.
is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi
tudes are rescued from premature graves, and
saved to the love and affection centred on theiu.
It acts speedily and surely against ordinary colds,
securing souiid and health-restoring sleep. No
one will suffer troublesome Influenza and pain
ful Rrouchitis, when they know how easily
they can be cureiL
Originally tho product of long, laborious, and
Successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil
is spared in making every bottle in the utmost
possible perfection. It may be confidently re
lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has ever
exhibited, and capable of producing cures as
memorable as tho greatest it has ever effected.
