That very ammu nition might have been a defense against foreign enemies, and the safeguard of the home which it has destroyed, had it been wisely guid ed. The wife who (Toos not give Iier husband a kindly welcome Lome after bis daily toil docs not deserve any of the blessings which that toil brings her. But they 0will say, '"The children and the servants worry our lives out, and our husbands don't know anything about what we have to go through. Iheir work is easy compared with that, etc." But stop, my dear friend the troubles of household affairs are of a very temporary na ture. Oh, wives, if you wish your husband's intellects to be clear and souud in business, keep them from worry at home, you have allevia tions: von have nurseries and nurse- Tiimrk " Tim rluldren are out of doors a great part of the time, and often sleep during theday ; you ro nnitf. nt liberty to inllict the Tmimlmrnbirt minishment upon re o fractory little ones, and to give your domestics a scolding n mey real I v deserve it, or to dismiss them if they do not amend ; but for mercy's sake do not vent your rea sonable or unreasonable irritation upon him who has to bear the real lan-den and heat of the day. If you do, you are Hinging away the chief corner-stone of your home, and will find, too late, that you have been a female Sampson, and have pulled it down upon you. J'anny I4 cm. Beecher at Faro. Speaking of ministerial knowl lire of forbidden things reminds ct us of Henry Ward Beecher. The unregenerate hearers of Henry "Ward Beecher have often been surprised at his knowledge of cer tain things about which a preacher is supposed to be blissfully ignor ant. "Sir. Beecher always makes it a point to familiarize himself with subjects n which be is called upon to preach. An old citizen informs us that during his residence in this city 3Ir. Beecher was impelled to preach a sermon against gambling, and, in order that lie might speak "by the card," he wanted to learn something of short cards, banking frames, etc. .Now. lienrv aru s early education had been neglected in this particular, but he procured an introduction to Col. Alvord, the nreseut Chairman of the Demo- emtio State Central Committee. In his young days Col. Alvord had done a little in the wav of straight ml V poker (draw is a later invention of the enemy), seven-up, euchre, brag, fortv-fives, and other games of chance. Xo amateur sportsman had a better conception ot the val ue of three jacks than Col. Alvord, or played a closer game of seveu un. lie could hold the tiger as O near level as any other man living. Col. Alvord readily consented to enlighten Mr. Beecher, and the two had frequent meetings in the back room ot the Branch Bank .where the preacher became theoret ically proheicnt m all the arts ami tricks of cards. Having fully in formed himself, he preached a pow erful sermon, which created consid erable unjust suspicion that Brother beecher had, at some period ot his hi. known how it was himself. Ox Monday last the venerable Joseph Bradley completed his 9Gth year. Mr. Bradley is the oldest living printer in the United States, if not in the world. He still works at the case in the Sun otliec, and for correctness and speed can put to the blush many who are scorts of years his juniors. Annie Lord, the daughter of a Lathing attendant at Lymouth, England, recently received a med al from the Koyal humane Society, for rescuing a lady who, last Au gust, was swept out to sea and was brought insensible to shore by her rescuer. A Physician being asked by a patient if he thoughta little spirits now and then would hurt him much, he replie.d : " I do not know Qhat a little occasionally would hurt you much; but if you don't take any, it won't hurt you at all." . Artificial milk has been prepar ed bv a French chemist from su- gar,dry whites of eggs, carbo late of soda, olive oil and water. By sub stituting gelatine for whites of eggs, and with less admixture of water cream is obtained. o New York beaux are horrified to learn that many of their lady friends designated with an asterisk those of their Xew Year's callers who drank too much wine. Thev whose names are on this black list will receive no more invitations. An exchange says that a blind beggar who frequents the streets of St. Louis, has the following an nouhecment affixed to his bosom : ""Blind I Father of four children, the result of a terrible accident." A deed was recently prepared by a law firm in Illinois, which was thirty feet long. It transfer red two thousand pieces of land in Northwestern Iowa, all owned by one man. The Earm and Home. CIIARCOAJL FOR, SICK CATTLE.. Nearly all animals become sick from improper eating. In nine cases out of ten, the digestion is wrong. Charcoal is the most effi cient and rapid corrective. It will cure in a majority of cases, if prop erly administered. An example.of its use the hired man came in with the intelligence that one of the finest cows was very sick and a kind neighbor proposed the usual drugs and poisons Tlie owner being ill, and unable to examine the cow, concluded that ths trouble came from some ever eating, and ordered a teacup of pulverized charcoal given in water. It. was mixed, placed in a junk bottle, the head field upwards, and the water with its charcoal poured downward;?. In live minutes an improvement was visible, and in a few hours the ani mal was in the pasture quietly eat ing grass. Another instance of equal success occurred with a youn'' heifer which became badly bloated by eating green apples af ter a hard wind. The bloat was so severe that the sides were almost as hard as a barrel. The old remedy, salaratus. was tried for the purpose of correcting the acidity. But the attempt to put it down always caused coughing, and it did little good. Half a teacupful of fresh powered charcoal was next given. In six hours all appearance of bloat had gon?, and the heifer was well. Country Gentleman. SPOILING- 1IOUS KS FEET. It is almost impossible to get a horse shod without having the frogs cut away. All verterinary surgeons, all horsemen, all leading blacksmiths, agree that the frog should not be pared one particle not even trimmed. Xo matter how pliable and soft the frog is, cut away smooth on all sides, and in two days it will be dry and hard as a chip. You might as well cut oft all the leaves or trees and expect them to flourish as to pare away the frog and have a healthy foot. The rough spongy part of the frog is to the foot what leaves are to the tree the lungs. "Never have a red hot shoe put upon the foot to. burn it level. If you can find a black smith that is a mechanic enough to level the foot without red-hot iron,, employ him. The burning process deadens the hoof and tends to con tract it. If you do not think sor try the red-hot poker on your finger-nail, and see how it will effect the growth of that. There are many other important points in shoeing horses, but these two are of more importance than all the rest, level to tlie apprehension of men not skilled in horse, and the two most disregarded. HOW TO P.AXLSU FLEAS. The oil of pennyroyal will cer tainly drive these pests oft"; but a cheaper method, where the herb flourishes, is to throw your dogs and cats into a decoction of it once a week. Mow the herb and scatter it in the beds of the pigs once a month. Where the herb cannot be got, tlie oil may be procured. In this case, saturate strings with it and tie them around the necks of dogs and cats, pour a little on the back and about the cars of hogs, which you can do while they are feeding w'.thout touching them. By repeating these applications every twelve or fifteen days, the fleas will llec from your quadrupeds, to their relief and comfort in the house. Strings saturated with the oil of pennyroyal and tied around the neck and tail of horses will drive oft lice; the strings should be sat urated once a day. OliKDlF.NCK IX CIlII.l)i:KX. It is unspeakable what a blessing it is to a child, what a saving of unhappiness and wickedness in af ter life, to be early taught absolute obedience ; there must be no hesi tating or asking why, but what a mother says must at once be done. The young twig bends easily, but remember that, in after years, it grows hard, and you will break be fore you can bend it. A little steadiness at first will save you many years' sorrow. While you insist upon obedience, however, you must take care that you do not provoke a child, and tempt it to dis obedience, bv unreasonable and foolish commands. "Provoke not yonrchildren to wrath ;" and when it is necessary to punish them, see that it never be done violently and in passion, but as a duty. HOME. Homo is the place in all this world where hearts are sure of each other. It is the place of confidence. It is the place where we tear oft the mask of guarded and suspicious coldness which the world forces us t ) wear in self-defence, and where we pour out the unreserved com munication of full and confiding hca-ts. It is the spot where ex pressions of tenderness gush out without any sensation of awkward ness, and without any dread of rid icnl. Let a man travel where he will, home is the place to which "his heart untrammelled fondly turns." lie is to double all pleas ure there. He is to divide all pain. A happy home is the single spot of rest which a man has "upon this earth for the cultivation of his no blest sensibilities. HOLLOW 1IOKX REMEDY. The following remedy can be re lied upon : "First put" a little tur- ! pentine between and back of the ! horns; then take two teacups half full of salt and water, and pour one in each ear both at the same time once a day for three successive days. This cures the hollow horn every time." Emphatic. To the question t u Can any good thing come out of Nazareth ?" we have this manner of an answer from General A. J. Hamilton, of Texas, whoin a speech just before the late election there, said : " I am not a Democrat in the present acceptation of the term. Nor do I claim to be identified with that party. They are my as sociates, my neighbors, my friends; they constitute the refinement, the wealth, the intelligence ot the Statc. And when Governor Davis tells me that such people are thieves, I tell him in the face of this assembly, and in the presence of the living and the eternal God, he is a liar !" Don't Borrow Trouble. When Caesar was advised by his friends to be more cautious of the security of his person, and not to walk among the people without arms or any one to defend him, he always replied to these admoni tions "He that lives in fear of death, every moment feels its tor tures ; I will die but once." t I TV 'I' r T " I ' 'f Okegon City. Those cured by it are lelt as. K- sUiiv .is if thev had never bad the disease.. Fever and "iie is not alone the consequence of the miasniati . poison. A great variety of dis orders arise from its irritation, among which,' a'-e N-.'uraliria, Rheumatism, Gout, Headache, i5iiii'i:i!'-s, Tooth;:che, Earache, Catarrh, Aslh m i Palttit-ition, Painful A flection of the Spleen,, -Ilv'-teri '-s, Pain in the iiowel.j, Cdic, Paralysis, aiid ieraneuieiit of the- Stomach, all of which, when originating in th.is cause, put on the in termittent tvpe, or become periodical. This "Ci'kk" expols the poison from the blood, and fori sequent! v cures them all alike. It is an in vair.able protection to immigrants and ersons travelling ;r temporarily residing in the mala rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily while exposed to the infection, that will be ex creted froi'i the svstem, and cannot accnmulate in sulli f-ient quantity to ripen into disease. -Hence it is even more valuable for protection than cure; and few will ever suffer from Inter miitents if thev avail themselves of the protcc-. tion this remedy affords. For lArrr f'nmplninfs, arising from torpid-, itv of tlie Liver, it is an excellent remedy, stim ulating the Liver into healthy activity, and pro ducing many truly remarkable cures, where oilier medicie.es fail. Hair v igOT, drossinir f S w liicli i s 7"-- once agreeauie, healthy, and, effectual for preserving the hair. Jt soon restores faded: or (j ray hair to its or iq in a I' color, with the fjloss and freshness of youth. Thii hair is thickened, falling hair checked., and baldness often, though not always cured -by its use. Nothing can restore the hair where the follicles are jtv. stroyed, or the glands, atrophied" and! deeayed ; but such as remain can be saved by this application, and stimu lated into activity, so that a new growth of hair is produced. Instead of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous-.. Its occasional use will prevent the hair from turning gr.ay or falling off, and consequently prevent baldness. The restoration of vitality it gives to the scalp arrests and prevents the forma tion of dandruff, which is often so xm-. cleanly and offensive. Free from those deleterious substances which make some preparations dangerous and inju rious to the hair, the Vigor can only benefit but not harm it. If wanted merely for a HAIR DRESSING,, nothing else can be found so desirable. Containing neither oil nor dye, it does not soil white cambric, and yet lasts, long on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy lustre, ami a grateful perfume. Prepared by Dr. J. C.
