TOW.V A.VIJ fOl'STY.
Til 13 OUTCAST.
BUiifc winds of winier, sobbing and moan-
Thick oiiot my rags with your pitiless
Land;
Here in the darkness, cold and despairing,
Homeless arid friendless, and starving I
PI a lid.
Scourged by ihe white icy whips of the
tempest.
1 wander, forlorn, on my desolate way.
Forgotten of earth, and forsaken of heavea,
q Too frozen to kueel and too hungry to
pray.
I look at the stately anl palace like dwel-
lins
THat line with their grandeur the path
way I tread;
I fcve-cy the brightness and warin'.h of the
heerthstone;
The plenteous board, with the wine and
the bread.
I see the heads bow'd with a reverent
q meaning
A blessing is breathed o'er the sumptu
ous tare;
"Will it rise to the ear of a pitiful Father.
Or die of the cold like the vagabond's
prayer ?
0IIark! midnight. The chime from the
"-' church-tower above me
Drops solemnly down through the whirl
of the storm;
If one could but pass through the gate to
the portal.
Could sleep there, and dream it was
lighted and warm.
Give way. cruel Uars! let me through to
a refuge !
Give way ! but I rave, and fierce winds
reply :
"No room in His House for His vagabond
children.
No room in His porch for an outcast to
to die."
No room in Ilia dwellings no room in the
chin clu's.
No room in the prison for hunger's no
crime.
Is there room in the bed of the river, I
wonder.
Deep down by the pier in the ooze and
the slime ?
Mock on, taunting wind! I can laugh but
an answer.
An hour, ami your bitterest breath J
defy;
Sfnce bars shut me out of God's house
among mortals.
I will knock at the gate of His home in
the sky ! tlcribner's Monthly.

Out in the pitiless night
Lo-mI winds are hurrying by ;
Not a star-gleam pierced thro' the leaden
folds
Of a stormy, moonless sky ;
Broad sheets of rain
Swept o'er the plain,
And out of their midst a cry.
Out in the pitiless night
A tender girlish form
No!; a shawl to pillow her aching head,
G Or shelter her from the storm!
Her robe she takes
The while she makes
Her new born infaut warm.
O Out in the pitiless night
They found her all alone;
Not a shelter for her head nor a gleam of
hope
(-Though her heart makes endless
And her suffering face,.
In that lonely place.
Would soften a heart ot stone.
moan
Out in the pitiless night
While he who wrought' her shame
May walk in the glorious light of day
W'ih a fair ami honored name,
And never a hand
In all Ihe land
I'e raided to blot his fame.

100 pounds deduct C ; all over
the third hundred is net. The net
weight of a hog weighing 100

In the domestic life of Thomas
Jefferson, the grand-daughter of
Jefferson, relates a Yankee trick
that is not well known in historv.
"When Mr. Jefferson died (July 4,
182G), an enthusiastic Democrat
and neighbor of Albemarle, Vir
ginia, observed that Jefferson, by
dying on the Fourth of July, had
raised himself and his party one
step higher in the temple of fame.
"When the rumor reached this parti
san, a few days later, that Adams
had died on that day, he exclaimed
in a passion, that "it was a d d
Yankee trick."
Eve had some advantage that
no other married woman ever en
joyed, chief among which was the
fact that her husband could never
lacerate her heart by telling '"how
his mother used to cook."
A lady whose husband was sud

railroad bridge, with a train upon
it, actually wept her entire sight

In consequence of Mrs. Wood
hull's declaration that Henry Ward
Beecher reviewed and approved of
her Stein way Hall speech before it
was delivered, the distinguished
Pastor of Plymouth Church has
been relentlessly pursued by a smail
army of incorrigible "interview

remarks on the pleasure of dying
were suggested by anticipations of
some such calamity.
The English are a beer drinking
people. The last annual report
shows a total of 32,023 licensed
breweries. Some of these brew
0,000,000 and 7,000,000 barrels a
year, and they pay a license fee
which foots up yery nearly $2,000,
000 of our money. The value of
the beer exported from England to
the East Indies, China, Australia,
United States and elsewhere, is
nearly $10,000,000.
The Deputy Sheriff of Mobile
was handed a document to serve
on a gentleman. The document
had thereon the word instanter.
The officer hunted all over town
for two days and returned with the
report that he could find no such
a man as Mr. Instanter. Grant
should claim that man as a rela
tive and give him a little post-office
for a cent.

It bravely opposes the New De

all such nonsense which leads first

Ayer's
Sarsaparilla
Is widely known
as one of the most
effectual remedies
ever discovered for
cleansing the sys
tem and purifying
the blood. It has
y&mWffzMf stood the test of
stantly growing rep
utation, based on its
intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re
markable cures. So mild as to be safe and
beneficial to children, and yet so searching
as to- effectually purge out th great cor
ruptions of the "blood, such as the scrofulous,
and syphilitic contamination. Impurities
or diseases that have lurked in. the systems
for years, soon yield to this powerful anti
dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful
cures, many of which are publicly known,,
of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases,.
Ulcers, Irruptions, and eruptive dis
orders of the skin, Tumors, Blotches
Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St
Anthony's ITire, Hose or Erysipe
las, Tetter, Salt Kheum, Scald
llead, irinjjworm, and internal Ul
cerations of the Uterus, Stomach,
and Liver. It also cures other com
plaints, to which it would not seem especi
ally adapted, such as Dropsy, Dyspep
sia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease,
Female Weakness, Dehility, and
LiCiicorrhoea, when they are manifesta
tions of the scrofulous poisons..
It is an excellent restorer of health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing the
appetite and vigor of the digestive organs,
it dissipates the depression and listless lan
guor of the season. Even where no disorder
appears, people feel better, and live longer,
for cleansing the blood. Tlie system moves
on with renewed vigor and a new lease of
life.
