Cax't Tell. We are constantly being
asked by persons who reside on the west
pide of the river for information w hen the
hoats leave this place for Corvallis and
points along the river. It is impossible
for us to give such information, as we be
lieve the boats have no regular days of
leaving this place. The Success is the
only boat now rtmn'ng. and fhe can't
make more than one trip per week.
Wiuiivu School. By an advertisement
ja this issue, it will be seen that Prof.
Maerum will open bis night writing school
i i the rooms formerly occupied by the
Crf.tMin.ir School of Mr. Pope, on Monday
evening next. We hope the young men
of our town will avail themselves of this
opportunity to learn to wi He. The chuigt-s
are certainly low enough to suit any one.
lUxeE. Cataract Hose Company,. No. 2,
will give a grand Christmas Ball on Mon
day evening. Dec. 25th. at Myers Hall No
pains be spared to make this the graud
hall of the season, and it being fur the
benefit of a worthy company, we hope
there will be a lull attendance.
From the most reUabld sources, we
learn that the enterprise of the South Car
olina Land and Immigration Association,
whose (lift Concerts we ad ertise in our
paper, and bv which 500.000 is to be
distributed January Stb. 1872. is of the
most honorable and' fair character, and is
endorsed by the best men of South Caro
lina and New York.
The Senator. The Senator has been
hauled out of the way of the drift "wSod
which is flowing in the river, and is in a
n.ife place to keep her from being knock
ed to pieces. She is badly damaged, and
the probabilities are that she will ptove a
total loss. The water is about twelve leet
deep in her.
Lt.FCTiox ok Directors;. At the annual

JJetckneo. Mr. Joidan. one of the
contractors for the construction of the
locks.wbo left so mysteriously about three
weeks ago. retained to Portland last
Wednesday. We see it stated in a Port
land paper that he returns with sufficient
money to pay off all indebtedness, and
nijl do so and io on with his contract to
completion. We trust this is true.
Eki.iwiols. Rev. Mr. Driver, agent of
the American Bible Society, will preach
in town next Sabbath in the morning at
the Methodist Church, in the evening at
the Congregational Church. Collections
f-.r the Bible Society will be taken.

Shoo-Fly have been taken to the head of
the basin, at Cancmah. The Albany is in
t ie Dry Dock, undergoing repairs, and
the Alice is nearly completed and ready

No one disputes the fact that the safety
and perpetuity of the state depends solely
on the maintenance of civil order, and
ence we are interested with all others in
everything which goes to promote this.
We commend to teachers and school of
ficers and to the people generally, the
able articles bearing upon these points in
the last number of the Journal of Educa
tion' In addition to these, it contains
the paper, complete, read by Mrs. Mary

Tiik economy of our General
Administration, says the Jfohnes
County (Ohio) frrrmer, is shown
in this, that in I S 7 1 we received
3,850,000 from the sale of public
lands, and paid $1,779,080 fur col
lecting it. This was iitty-three per
cent. "What do our business men
think of this? Uncle Sam also pays
seven per cent, for collecting his
revenue, and six per cent, for ob
taining his custom-house duties.
It takes 821,000,000 a .year to pay
custom-house oflicers and internal
revenue oflicers. Private individu
als would take the contract of this
collection for two and a half per
cent and consider themselves richly
paid"
