Misixt- We learn that a rather amus-'-ng
incident occurred last Monday night
'it the city of the ' Good Indians."' Some
of our citizens in company with a couple
of victors, selected this place tor a secret
retreat at an unseasonable hour. Tor what
purpose we don't propose to tell, but suf
fice it to sav, that their deeds were for
dark hour of midnight. All ww quiet in
the peaceful city, and while some of the
p.irtv were at work making their way into
ii.o ,"!...!.- recesses, llii' sentinel who was
stvioned to prevent any intrusion on their
:midnl'ht work shot oil' a pistol and the
numbers cf the "(ioo.l Indiin"' city took
hutily in all diredions. JSut one poor
mortal, thinking his captors were upon
him too close at hand to m ke a success
f ll attempt at esc.ioe. inibetled hiuneli in
an excavation which had be-n made in
the earth in close proximity to a "Good
'Indian." Alter the excitement pass.-d oil
the company formed again and returned
to town and took a drink. That little
thin" was evidently "set up" by Doc. II ir
luw." He is "oil it." Th-i visitors as well
as the citizens of this place who were in
the party, will probably long remember
t ho lonely vi-it to the city of the "Good
Indians" on last Monday nio;ht
Ut;ircKi. The W. T . Company, (Hon.
Tfolladay) have reduced the fare trom
'this place to Portland on the steamer to
twenty-five cents. This is taking things
in time. The Carrie came up here last
week, and it was supposed she would run
in opposition to the old line, but has as
,.t jh t made a ti ip. If the terror of a
leainboat being tied up at our town has
such beneficial effects on the monopoly.'
we would advise our citizens to buy a
boat and keep her tied up. The effect is
a good as an opposition and probably
more profitable. Had the old Company
kept the fare at the same rates it was be
fore they bought out the 1. T. Company,
our citizens would not, have complained
nor had any desire to fee an opposition
ihit the vindicti veness of the Company in
raising the fare from here to Portland the
moment they got possession, is generally
reciprocated by our people.
Si dkkx Dkath. We are indebted to Dr.
riureiay for the following particulars rela
tive to the sudden death which occurred
-in this city on the 18th. "Kenit'i McLean,
a stout looking young man. who had been
ut work on the canal at Linn city, came to
ill,- I'luetsix Hotel on the 35th in.-.t.. took
3 pick and died on the morning of the ISth.
Peing an entire stranger, the coroner took
chrg-i of the body and had it, decently
buried. Iy letters found on deceased, he
tippears to have been a young man" of
'good standing, and has two brothers in
J'icton. Nova Scotia. About, SCO were
found in his possession, enough to pay his
funeral expenses. Dr. Pare lay has com
municated the sad intelligence to his rela
tives. ' .'Ni't.y as an i'.vkss.7 ' A little "un pleas
aatness" occurred in the Good Templar's
Lodge last Saturday evening between two
of the "brethren." A member of the last
Legislature threatened to slap the face of
a '-brother." who rather objected to such
freedom, and drew a pistol, whereupon .he
Legislator took to his heels and made a
hasty retreat, leaving without giving the
n?u;il salutation to the chair and forgett'u g
to take his hat ale.ng with him. It is a d
that his coat-tal would have answered the
purpose of a checker board as he flew
down the & birrs. It is a matter of regret
that , such lit tie ' un pleasantnesses" should
occur among 'brothers."
Pi'san This amiable and gentle sister
of the strong minded persuasion lectured
last Friday evening in this ci:y. She was
ch'cidediy "on it." and gave it to Uev. Mr.
Gerry for bis presumption in opposing her
pot doctrine, but failed utterly in making
a refutation of his positions. We came in
for a share of her gentle abu-e, bat it did
n t hurt us, and we are happy to say that
Mtr love for dear Susan and her dog
m Is not at all diminihed. We might
cy something mean if it was not fur the
Tfspeet we had for old age, ana also for
he uniform she wears. In another column
will be found a very interesting article in
regard to her lecture which has been writ
ten for us by a friend.
CitwGiNf; the Stukkt. The W. T. Com-
piny arc laying a car track from the hill
to Main street for the purpose of bringing
dirt down to change the street. It is pro
posed to run Main street on a straight lino
to the basin, within forty feet and then
turning east to the road leading to Cane
faah. ttuis vacating the street where it now
turns the corner, and by this means giving
a much larger space of ground in one
body on the east side. It is the intention
of the Company to erect a machine shop
on this ground for their own use, and
probably a branch shop for railroad work.
Caution'. For a few months past a cer
tain Doctor at Portland has been advertis
ing very extensively in Oregon as effect
in? remarkable cures. We would caution
tion our citizens agiinst relying on what
these quacks advertise. We visited a
3'oung lady at Portland last week who had
placed herself under the care of this all
cure physician and paid him SCO to cure
ner eye. He prostrated her to a bed of
sickness and nearly caused her to lose her
s'glit. Had she remained under his care
another week she would have been in her
grave ere this.
Accidkxt. Last Tuesday night. as an en
gine was coming down the track with a
disabled tender, on making the turn on
one of the curves above town, the fender
fal h the track. It caused the mail train
rom the south to be delayed on Wednes
day, on account of obstructing the track,
me tender was raised and placed upon
bottomed cars and taken to the ma
rine shops. The trains were allowed to
pass after two hours delay.
PEnsoxAi.. We had a call last Monday
from Messrs. Alfred B. Mason, and D. G.

Party. They visited our city for the
Wle of obtaining some Indian relics,

Arrived. The regalia and other neces

Ax Offer. We will give to any young
lady who will get up a club of fifteen sub

of January, and pay in the sum of 337,50.

young lady to get enough music to last
her for a tew years. We will also furnish
Peters' Musical Monthly for six months to
all who will send in three subscriber
with the money, or for five subscribers we
will furnish them the Magazine fur one

Susan, in her lecture last Friday, said
that her doctrines did not increaso di
vorces, lint in almost the very next sen
tence she would tell the women to be the
owners of their houses, and if their hus
bands did not behave themselves they
would be masters of the situation and
they could invite them to take a walk.
Ai.axac McCormick's Almanac for

In Business. We notice thYtTtvir form
or townsmen, Messrs. Geo. Plumey and S.
S. Bailey, are partners in business in Port
land. Their many friends in this place
wish them abundant prosperity.
Jkwki.rv. We call the attention of our
readers to the advertisement of Mr. B. L.
Stone, of Portland. Ife is the first, in the
field with his stock of holiday presents,
and has the best selection ia"his line in
Portland. Give him a call.
Hoes.--Messrs. Albright & Log-.;s, at
the old butcher's shop, want all the pork
they can get, for which they pay the
highest market price in cash. See their
advertisement in another part of this issue,
and give them a call.
Pokk. This article appears to be scarce
and the packers in tills city are unable to
procure all they desire. The price paid
is unusually high, ranging from seven to
nine cents. This is the year our farmers
ought to get rich.
Boat News. The Fannie Patton started
up the rivei last Monday, for the first time
this season. The Success and Fannie are
now the only boats running on the upper
river. The water is again falling, and it
is expected that the Fannie will have to
bj laid up on her return.
Nkaiung Coui'i.KTiox. The fine resi
dence of Messrs. R. and I. Jacob is fast
r.earing completion, and when fini.-hed.
will be the finest house in the city. We
will give a full description of it when com
pleted. Co.v.i'LiMKXTAKY. We return our thanks
for a complimentary ticket to attend a

evening.
Iilarine Facts
Says the San Joaquin ?(-p.tbiican : There
are, we believe, 203 vessels ereat and
small in our navy. The average cost of
each vessel is $ 1 .':';,!) if. The average
cost of of-ch vessel in the British navy is
Gi),)00. or nearly one-half le.-s than ours,
yet we should feel Very "indignant if told
that English vessels of war were worth
double as much us ours. It costs for each
ton of the tonnage of our navy Slol 10.
but in the British navy the same item of
expense only amounts to $72 2G. It
costs the United States an average of $(i)0
per man to keep her navy afloat, while
the British navy is floated on an average
of $G ) per man. The annual pay roll o
the navy foots up 5.C00.0tK).bu;Congress
m ui Logan says over 5,000,000 are paid
to the officers and the rest to the men. We
have 1,100 officers in our navy and 8 503
men and an officer to every six men and
a fraction over, We have, exclusive of
the retired li-f. ten rear-admirals ; they
uverage about live at sea and tire at home,
but all draw their salaries. The aver ge
of other officers in service and not in ser
vice, but ail drawing saleiies. is about the
same. John P. IIu!esus quakery, impo
sition and ignorance rules the country,
and if the figures and estimates we have
given above are correct it is quite evident
tin navy is largely influenced by the pop
ular sentiments. Dawes. Gideon Wells
and others have uttered the same opinions,
yet things go on from bad to worse.
A SiNGUf ut Coincident. The Shenan
doah Herald, published in the beautiful
valley laid waste by Sheridan during the
war, thus refers to a singular Coincidence:
"The Sth day of October is twice mem
orable in the history of the United States.
On the iSth -of October. 1801, the fair
valley of the Shenandoah was laid Waste
bv Sheridan and his hosts. Our houses,
our barns, our mills, and even our sanc
tuaries dedicated to God, became a prey
to this relentless fire-fiend. For fifty miles
burning houses ajid barns lit up our val
ley, and upon every hand theories of our
frightened women and children fell upon
the ears of the relentless demons. Seven
years have rolled round. The aniversary
of that awful day is marked by burning
homes and wide-spread desolation. Chi
cago, the beautiful city of the West,
has fallen a victim to the flames. Michi
gan, the home of those who obeyed the
inhuman orders of Sheridan, the lire fiend
of the Shenandoah, 1s desolated by the
far reaching tongue of an irresistible fire.
Thousands have perished in the flames.
As if to make the coincidence perfect.
Sheridan figures in both. 'The. mills of
the gods grind slowly, but fine.' '"

There is an eld proverb which says, "Ex
perience is the safest guide." To this guide
the sick and ailing naturally turn when cast
ing about fjr the means of relief. They
inquire what medicine "has done for others,
before they adopt it thiinsalve3. Of all the
remedies and preventives in use, Ilcs'etter's
Stomach Bitters meet the test most triumph
antly, and hence'its immcr.si popularity and
vast sales. The sufferer from indigestion is
sure to find some one among his friends who
has been curct of that ailment by the
famous vegetable stomachic. The victim of
fever and ague, liver complaint, constipa
tion, nervous prostration, or general debility,
has only to make inquiry in the neighhor
hood where he resides in .order to di.-cover
what this standard restorative has effected in
cases similar to his own. n the published
testimony to its merits lie will find a volume
of proofs of its sanitar- properties, which it
is impossible for his common sense to reist.
He tries it, and the effect it products on his
system adds another to the host of witnesses
in its favor. Thus, its reputation, founded
on tacts, not assertions, continually grows
and spreads. Charlatans and impostors,
some of them mere local ti ick.-ters, and oth
ers who take a somewhat wider range, at
tempt to thi u.st imo the hands and down the
throats of invalids, their haphazard concoc
tions, as substitutes lor the tonic which fir
s many years has been n medicinal staple
throuuhout the United States, Spanish
America, Canada, and the West Indies, but
only succeed to a very limited extent. In
this reasoning age, the people, having as
certained what is really deserving of' their
confidence, decline running after stranire
gods.''

hair is thickened, falling hair cheeked, o
and baldness often, though not always
cured by its use. Nothing can restore
the hair where the follicle.? are Je
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and
decayed; but such as remain can bo
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, so that a new
growth of hair is produced. 0 Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling .off, and
consequently. prevent baldness Tho
restoration of vitality it gives to the
scalp arrests and prevents the forma
tion of dandruff, which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Free from those
deleterious substance.? which mko
some preparations dangerous and inju
rious to the hair, the Vigor, can only
benefit but not harm it. If wanted
merely for a HAIR DRESSING;
nothing else can be found so desirable:
Containing neither oil nor dye, it dde3
not soil white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, giving it a rich, glossy
lustre, and a grateful perfume.
