Mrs. R. E. English left Wednes
day for a visit at the home of her
father, Mr. S. Miller, at Lebanon,
Oregon. En route she will visit her
sister, Mrs. J. A. Logan, at Ar
lington. Rufus Brutschcr, fftrmer Weston
boy who of recent years has been
mastering the motor car trade at
Detroit. Mich., has enilsted in the
army. Ho is now at Camp Wheel
er, Georgia.
Mr. and Mrt. John Walker of Ta
coma, Wash., have been visiting
Mrs. C. A. Barrett, sister of Mrs.
Walker, at Athena. Mrs. Walker
was In Weston Monday to call on
pioneer friends.
-Goerge Schnitzcr was released
from custody soon after his recent
arrest in Walla Walla, and is back
again in Weston. It developed up
on investtagtion that his aiiegeu
seditious remarks could not be re
garded as treasonable. ,
Frank Snider and Joe Wurzer
spent Friday and Saturday along
the classic banks of the Umatilla.
While not especially large in num
bers, their catch was dandy for
size. Frank's biggest beauty meas
ured 15 inches in length.
Mrs. Abbie S. Mays of Pendleton
and Mrs. Eva E. Hartman of Port
land were guests Sunday of their
sister, Mrs. L. S. Wood. They
were accompanied by Mrs. Roberts
of Portland and S. C. Price, an ex
tensive farmer of Wilbur, Wash.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Harris have
arrived from their farm near Hing
ham, Montana, and will remain un
til after harvest. Mr. Harris re
ports encouraging crop prospects
in the Hinnham neighborhood.
Grain looks good now, and rain will
insure a bumper yield.
The remains of the late Alexander
McDonald, prominent Pilot Rock
farmer who died last Friday at the
age of 50 years, were brought to
Weston Sunday for interment. Fun
eral services were held at Pendle
ton. The burial service was con
ducted by Rev. W. S. Payne of
this city.
Monday's annual school meeting
was slimly attended indicating
either indifference or satisfaction
on the part of the voters. Joe
Hodgson, was elected director to
succeed J. M. Banister, who retires
from the board and was not a can
didate for re-election. Frank Price
was re-elected clerk.

C. K. Cranston, secretary of the
Pendleton Commercial Association,
writes the Leader as follows: "We
are making the send-off for the Na
tional Army quota, which is to
leave for training camp next Tues
day, a county-wide demonstration.
This association, with the help of
the Elks, has undertaken the enter
tainment of the men for the even
ing previous to their departure,
and is promoting and managing
the 'doings' the next morning; but
we are asking further help and par
ticipation by all those patriotic
people and organizations in the
county who can and will come to
Pendleton and join,"

leaving the uplands In a few days
for La Crosse, Wash.,- where Joe
will assist J. L. Hodgson this year
in harvest work.' Later on he ex
pects to engage in farming near La
Crosse. He has leased his upland
holdings to John M. Woe, who
comes from Kenncwick. . ,Y
Spring-sown wheat and barley
have continue3 to suffer In the
Weston neighborhood from lack of
rain, and the latter crop is regard
ed as practically a failure. In
parts of the uplands farmers are re
ported to be plowing up their bar
ley fields and replanting to pota
toes or grain. They are doing this
only in spots where especial dam
age was done by grasshoppers and

county and Captain Williams of the
Oregon State Miliary Police raided
a moonshine still Saturday night on
the 'head waters of Little Butter
creek. Three men and 25 gallons
of corn whiskey were captured.
The still was brought to Pendleton.
Bob Wheeler, expert Pendleton
angler, took 38 trout Wednesday
from the Umatilla near Thorn
Hollow. None was under ten inch
es in length, and four of them
measured sixteen inches each.
Miss Fay Warren has arrived
home for a vacation visit from her
school at Marysville, Wash. Miss
Warren stopped at Eltopia a week
for a visit with her brothers.
