dians culminated In a tribal meeting,

erintendent Asbery were speakers.
The Indians declared themselves cap
able of self-government and asked that
some of their vast resources be made
available for immediate use. Criticism
of the present practice of the Govern
ment In dealing with the Indians was
made and resolutions were adopted
asking the government to give ths
Indians a chance.
Work of opening ths central Ore
gon highway, which will extend from
the Idaho state line to the ses, wss
begun last week, when a crew of
engineers working under the direc
tion of the state engineering depart
ment, pitched camp and stsrted work
on survey of the portion of the pro
posed road from Eugene to Deadwood,
in the coast mountains. The three
links of this highway will be the pro
posed rosd from Florencs to Eugene,
the rosd from Eugene through the
McKettzie pass to Mitchell and tha
John Day highway from Mitchell to
Ontario, on the Idaho boundary.
District Forester Cecil announced
.that approval has been given by ths
secretary of agriculture to co-operative
road work in Oregon Involving
$1,114,194, which Is distributed to 15
projects. This amount is mstcbed by
the state, assisted in some instances
by counties. The project on which co
operation is authorized by the secre
tary are as follows: McKenzle Psss
road, Eugene-Florence road. Pendla-ton-La
Grande road, Medford-KIamath

SURVEYORS ARE LOOKING
FOR GOOD MOUNTAIN PASS
The road surveyor who were at
work for several week in the vic
inity of Bingham Springs have, it i
reported to the Leader, been order
ed to the summit on what is known
a the Umatilla river or old Thoma
& Ruckles route aero the Blue.
It is alo reported that when they
finish thi work they will be direct
ed to survey the Elgin-Weston or
Toll Gate route.
A second camp of surveyor is
said to be located on Meacham
creek and will survey that route
and what i known a the Cabbage
hill route the latter lieing the one
selected by a majority of the Uma
tilla and Union county court for
the La Grande-Pendleton road.
If these reM)rt are correct it
would seem to indicate that the
state highway commission and the
federal government, who are sur
mised to be co-operating in these
surveys, are determined to investi
gate every possible pass across the
Bup mountain liefore determin
ing upon the route of the state
highway and the government post
road.
