The reports of the conditio of
2,691 National Banks in tha Unit
ed States for March 10th have just
been collected by the comptroller of
the currency. Tha resources of
these banks aggregate the enormous
sum of $2,312,771,247. This is
$33,000,000 mora than six months
ago, but is nearly $60,000,000 less
thaa eighteen months ago. Th
heaviest item, of course, is the
amount of loans and discounts,
wnicli is 5l,J7,331,'JU4. This is
bout $76,000,000 less than it was
eighteen months ago. The next
large item is the value of United
States bonds deposited for circula
tioa. This item is $3 13,106,200, a
m Ann - a.
uecrease or sjp.juo.oju as com
pared with eighteen months ago.
The change is important, because it
affects the circulation of paper uion
ey. The amount of Botes outstand
ing March 10th, 1883, was $274,
081,157, a decrease of $36,436,700
as compared with Sept. 30, 1883.
Aaother item of interest . is the
amount of specie held. This was
$167,115,873 en March 10, 1885,
against 128,609,475 six menths
go, and $709,117,184 eighteen
uenths go. Hen is an increase
of $59,297,889, which not only off
eta the decrease ia paper money,
but leaves clear margin of nearly
$23,000,000 ef a better kiad of
money. The basks owed their de
realtors $1,011,850,149 on the 10th
ef March, 1835. This is a trifle
more than six months ago, but is
$54,980,235 lss than eigbt.en
iiieutbs ago. There are about 600
and includes a gain of 1,682,000
from the property aud income tax
and 371,000 from customs.
The net increase for the past
year is 837,926 or over $4,000,-

Ko serious accidents have occurred in
the starry heavens since I began to
observe and study their habits. Not a
star has wased, not a star has waned, to
my knowledge. Not a planet has
season -cracked or shown any ef the
injurious effect of our rigorous climate.
Not a star has ripened prematurely or
fallen off the treas. The varnish on
the very oldest stars I find, on close and
critical examination, to be in splendid
condition. They will all, no doubt,
wear as long as we need them, and wiuk
on long after we bare ceased ta wink
back.
Ia 1866 there appealed suddenly ia
the northern cro .vn a star of about the
third magnitude, bad worth at least
$250. It was generally coneeded by
astronomers that this was a brand new
star that bad never been used: but,
upon consulting Argelander's star-cat'
alog and price-list it was found that this
was not a new star at all, but an old
fiided-out star of the ninth magnitude.
with the front breadths turned wrong
side out, and trimmed with moonlight
along the seams.
After a few days SI phenomenal
brightness it gently ceased to draw a
salary as a star of the third magnitude,
and walked home with an "Uncle Tom's
Cabin" company.
It is such things as this that makes
the lifa of the astronomer one of constant
and discouraging toil. I have long con
templated, as I say, tha advisability ot
retiring, from this field of science and
allowing others to light the northern
lights, skim the milky way, and do
other celestial chores. I would do it
myself cheerfully if my health would
permit, but for years I have realized,
and so has my wife, that my duties as
an astronomer kept me up too much at
night ; and my wife is certainly right
about it when she says if I insist on
scanning the heavens night after night,
coming home late with the cork out of
my tolcscope and my eyes red and
swollen with these exhausting vigils, I
will be cut down in my prime. So 1 am
liable to abandon the great labor to
which I had intended to devote my life,
my dazzling genius, and ray princely
income. I hope that other savants will
spare me the pain of another refusal,
for my mind is fully made up that, un
less another skimmist is at once secured,
the milkey way will henceforth remain
uuskum.
