Oa Monday last some of our eitiiena, pur suant to a plan formed oa the preceding Sat urday, determined to celebrate the glorious Fourth in a social way. - Picuio style was .re solved 'upon, and Miller's grove, up Pine Creek, was selected aa the pUee. . It was a lorely davs Old Sol poured downltis cfarryv gladdening beams in radiant eflulgence with a warmth that would have beeu uncomforta ble bat for the umbrageous shelter famished bv the lazuriant, deciduous grove. Crentle sepbyrs fanned the leaves caressingly: ' j , - The brsezea came in gentle way, - The willow's harp they sweetly play." The songstei of the grave warbled ineea santly their tribute of praise and gladness. and when the merry langh of happy children was added thereto, it became truly a joyous scene. Exercises commenced by the Presi dent "i the Day, W. T. Williamson, calling the Rot. E. W. Morrison to open with prayer.". The song, "Star Spangled. Banner' was then rendered ia spirited style by the choir, consisting of Mrs. - Lounebury,. Miss Hartmaa. Messrs. Treed. McDonald and Williamson. The Declaration of Independ ene, that grand embodiment of underlying principles, was then read fry Mrs. Meacben. Suffice it to aav this ladr maintained her reputaUoevaa an elocutionist in happy style. The Orator of the day being1 absent, Mr. A. Meacben was called upon for an impromptu; effort, to which he spiritedly and eloquently responded. He descanted on the great gen era! principles of our government, the hero ism of our forefathers, the possible lurking daocrers. a historic" sketch ot the -Ancient Romans, with a brilliant peroration enjoin' ins all good citisens to stand for the right. His remarks were received with enthusiastic and prolonged applause. The effort would have been a creditable one, even after ample preparation." Another song by the choir, which was well received. Then various toasts were responded to by various gentle men, that of "The little children, by Mr. Biley, being peculiarly excellent. The pro gramme terminated by singing the National Anthem. The lunch was spread by groups in basket style, and everybody was happy. This material part of the day's enjoyment be ing finished, everybody, old and young, de voted themselves to having an old-fashioned "eood time." Games of all kinds were in- dulcad in. and all aeemed to throw off stiff ness and formality, and for that reason the occasion was a grand success. Soon heavy leaden clouds put in a lowering appearance, the zigg flashes of lightning, and the deep. heavy roll of thunder portended the coming storm.. And come it did. The fluttering was not conn ned to the leaves. It is always a picturesque spectacle to see a gathering obliged to hastily decamp because of a storm. .and the effect is much heightened by a fierce wind. The rain poured down in torrents un til the party reached Weaton, when, aa if that was fun enough, it abated, sand the even ing was very pleasant. - THE OREGON KIDMEY TEA. To-DAY is thetime announced by the Pen dleton papers for th meeting from the various precincts to' agree on a line for the division of Umatilla county. . We trust that, something may result from it. If we are going to di vide the county into three counties, there is no reason .nor necessity for cutting off this northeastern end of the county with from ten to seventeen townships. We are really en titled to one-third of the whole area, but as our population ia proportionally greater, we ought to yield somewhat. We require the mean between inconveniently large area, and a county too small to be self-sustaining with moderate taxation. We are in receipt of the eleventh annual catalogue of St. Helen's Hall. Portland, an institution of learning for girls. "The con stant aim being to give a sound and practioal education, and to aurreund the pupils with a refined Christian home and intercourse." And truly and well does this school -do its work. It is a potent agent for. good, and a credit to the State.
