SUCCESS ORANGE CONTESTANTS BUSY FOR FINAL STRUGGLE CARY & WILHELM MOVE TO TREMONT IN SESSION A visit to tbe county jail during tbe past week waa the result of a number of observation recently made from persons who were evidently disposed to find fault Tbe visit to the jail situated on tbe top of tbe conrt bouse At first thought it might appear that this would be a strange place to locate a jail. But an inspection of it will reveal that it is just the place. It is out of sight, it is airy and light, above the dust and noiae of tbe street, and easily kept clean. There is leae danger of tbe prisoners escaping, for any one leaving this floor must do so by way of the ele vator and since tbe building is flre proof the prisoners are not at any time in danger of fire. An inspection of the rooms and cells showed them to be clean and comfortable beyond expectation. Tbe cots are all provided with blankets, comforts, pillows and mattreseee. There are arrangements made so that every prisoner can have a bath once a week or oftener. New prisoners are all subjected to baths, if there is any evi dence of the need of it. The kitchen is as neat and clean as the kitchen of one of the leading down town hotels. The cooking is mostly done by steam. The tables and uter.eils are scoured white or bright and sbiny. There ia no filth or duet or dirt. One would feel perfectly free to take a meal from these tables and without any feel ing of repulsion or distrust. There would seem to be just one reason tor complaint, and we doubt that it Would recieve any support. That ia, that tbe county has gone to extreme lengths to provide for tbe comfort and sustenance of its defective classes. The question arises, is tbe county nadar any obliga tion to undergo so much expenditure for the comfort, of a class of people who have disregarded social conventions. Many of them have not been use to “square meals” or clean ones. A bath is or has been considered an unnec essary extravagance or a dangerous ex posure ; tbe soft side of a board, log or heap of earth a luxurious couch. Tbe woman’s department is notable for its light airy rooms, its clean couches, covered with white sheets, metal beds, wire mattreseee, blankets, etc. They are provided with a table and dine separately from tbe men. Apparently some one must have got ten a wrong impression in regard to this place. A visit to Kellys Butte did not change the view. While this place is not quite so elaborate as tbe jail over tbe court bouse, it is a modern jail in every sense. Tbe rooms are light and airy. The windows are large and let in a flood of pure air and sunlight, if tbe day be fine Tbe beds are mattreee- ee with quilts and blankets. Tbe blankets are washed freshly about every ten days. Tbe place does not bear tbe odors of tbe customary jail or workhouse. On inquiry made of the prisoners, information wan gained that they bad enough to eat. good food, good beds, were treated well, were reason ably healthy, were clean, took a bath at least weekly, were not troubled with vermin or bedbugs, required all new comers to take a bath, and if they de clined. they were given due notice and then “soused.” They must keep clean. One fellow declared they had too much to eat. The kitchen here is large, well pro vided with modern conveniences, clean, scrubbed daily, and the food looks pala table There is just one criticism to offer The storage room for perishable foods, such as meat and bread, ia 'not suitable, as it cannot be kept in first class sanitary condition. A little ex penditure for cement and the applica tion of the labor at hand would provide a roomy, clean, coo), dry, storage place for articles of food, and prevent consid erable loss by early decomposition. Tbe addition of a number of convenien ces common to ordinary markets wonld prove to be an economy. A Unique Commercial CMb Salem has started something new in the organisation of a commercial club that will include in its membership farmers and fruit growers of the sur rounding country as well aa business men of tbe city. Probably no section of the state is in closer touch with its outside territory, and such a move ia of great benefit to both city and oonatry.
