The December World’s Work contains a finely illustrated arti cle by Randall R. Howard on the development of improved sys tems of transportation for South eastern Oregon. A map of the “fenced in country,” show how about three-fourths of Oregon will be relieved of Its barricade by the now largely completed Hill road which will be paralleled by the Harriman lines and thus give an outlet for the projects of an area about a3 large as New England. The Greater Oregon Home Rule Association has prepared a lengthy list of propositions in regard to new laws and plans for the regulation and enforcement of the liquor business. We have read them all over with consider able care and find them in gen eral to be quite reasonable and practicable, provided they are enforced as proposed. But that remark might apply to any law. The grand opera singera who spend their vacations in Europe have a thrifty system. They work where their efforts will command the highest wages and spend their money where they can get the most for it. A Pennsylvania man has bougth a wife for $75. That is another instance of the high cost of living. In the old days a few pounds of tobacco or just a little taffy was the'regular price. Mexico is teaching us a lesson in economics. She is to own her own sleeping cars on the railroads and the price of an upper berth is to be cheaper than a lower one. If, you are an admirer of mag azine poetry, it may interest you to know that a recent poetical contest held by a magazine was won by an insane woman.
