E stacai »*. O r «., Dee. 7, 190s
To the Editor:—
I h«»e jnut read Brother E. I..
Thorpe’s article on Labor Unions and
the ••ranee. Brother riior|»e can only
s(>eak for himself and tlioee whom he
has heard express their views, which
are necessarily limited in number.
Likewise. I must s|>eak from the same
standpoint.
Eat the members with
whom I have conversed have not re
sented the efforts of the granges ami
the nnions to get together.
I oes not Brother Thorpe remember
that Brother Paulsen stated at Eugene
that if the State Grange would vote U a XI
that lie knew where «•>>> more could lie
secured?
Brother Paulsen evidently
lia>l the Federated Trades in mind. The
, State Grange voted the money with the
understanding that more money would
l»e secured from other sources.
I read
the statements in the i.abor Press and
saw nothing in them in any way derog
atory to the dignity of the Grange.
When the State Grange was circulat
ing the petitions for the initiation of
the Gross Earning Tax Bills, 85 copies
of the petitions were placed in the
hands of the Federated Trades for cir
culation. I was in Brother J. J John
son’s office when the Federated Trades
officials telephoned him that they could
use 35 copies more than the 50 they
then bad. I went with Brother John-,
eon when they were delivered.
We
sought the aid of the labor organizations ,
I
then and I do not see that we should be [
ashamed of the fraternal assistance of I
that organization now. It is the old
adage, “United we stand, divided we
fall,” or “In Union thpre is strength.’’
The lafsir organization is seeking the
friendship of the Grange and is trying to
win this by material beneficent acts.
At the suggestion of the labor organiza
tion, a conference was held in Portland
