SCENE ON THE FARM OF H. C. CAMPBELL, NEAR TROUTDALE, OREGON.
The above cut shows a fine view of
some of the highly bred horses on the
farm of H. C. Campbell, a half mile
west of Troutdale. The colts are young
fellows, the oldest being six weeks old
and the youngest aIsuit three days old.
It required some time and a lot of
patience to get the “ whole family "
shaped up and quiet long enough to le
taken. Rut they show up fine.
If you notice these horses are not
merely show horses — they are work
horses. Th* men were using one span
of the mares in the field in the morning
before the writer came, unawares, so
you understand this is no “dressed up"
ocean* ion.
Mr. Campbell ia interested in the
Sun-Dial ranch and ha* as bi* private
property, the St) acre* on which the
horses are kept. With Mr. C. F. Swig-
ert of Portland lie ha* planned to build
up a fiue stock farm second to none in
the state. They aim to provide draft
animals rather than drivers and *o their
1 stock consists ol registered Belgian
mares and stallion* and a number of
| pure bred, .imported, Spanish Jacks.
We didn't get much acquainted with
the latter, except as they have occasion
ally saluted us as we drove past, but
their large size and lung power was very
noticeable.
The horses are strong
bone<1, muscular fellows, docile and
easily kept, just such animal* as our
mills and factories need.
