Reading—Some of the Books
for Farmers.
The Gresham branch library is now
nicely settled in its new location in the
Metzger building, with Mrs. Hattie
Wustell in charge, and the public is
invited to call and see the cosy, attract*
ive room ami use the g<judly supply of
books. The reading room is open every
week day from 2 to 5 p. m. ami from 7
to Op. in. Books are issued on cards
during those hours. Any citisen can
obtain a card without expense
Now ia a good time to plan a abort
course of winter reading. If the books
you need are not on band the librarian
will get them for you from the Portland
library.
There is a fine collection of books on
dairying, stock raising and agriculture.
On dairying the following books are
now at the Gresham branch:

rial conference, which meets on Friday

it is that the general conference, meet­
ing-nice every four years, is composed

A milking contest for boys and girls
under the age of 17 —boys competing
with boys and girls with girls—has lieen
arranged by Superintendent Casswell (or
the Multnomah County and Grange
Fair and Carnival with suitable prises
to be offered to the winners.
Many of the directors are so much in
tavor of the above idea that they have
decided to make thia an annual event,
and the winning l»>y and girl for three
successive years will receive in addition
tn the annual prises a special prise of
material value.
This is a splendid chance for the boys
and girls on the farms and in the towns
as well.

M. Hager, a prominent and progres­
sive farmer and granger of Ru—llville,
was a welcome caller at the Herald of­
fice this week. Mr. llager is very en­
thusiastic over the coming (air and says
Ru—elville grange, although the young­
est in the county, will see to it that
Russellville will have one of the big­
gest and best exhibits at the fair. This
is the spirit that does thing*. We only
wish that the grange had more such
members as friend Hager.

Second Quarterly Meeting
The second quarterly meeting for the
Gresham and Estacada circuit of the
Free Methodist church for the confer­
ence year, will begin on Friday evening,
Sept. 27
and continue till Sunday
evening, Sept. 29. Diat. Elder, W. N.

They will be held in the Free Methodist
church at Gresham. Services will take
place Friday and Saturday evening and
