A FEW MINUTES WITH THE EDITOR THE JOURNAL’S FINE EFFORT Then» is not much of human ity in the man who will deliber ately use a pitchfork on a brute of any kind, much less a dog. Ford Metzger’s two hound dogs came home recently in a pitiable condition, their injuries evi dently being caused bv the prongs of a pitchfork. Ford very properly offers a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the of fending party. The Herald acknowledges re ceipt of the 100-page “Supple ment to the Fifth. Anniversary Edition of the Oregon Journal " At this time it is impossible for us to speak in adequate terms of this, the biggest and best work of its kind ever produced in the Oregon country. CLL B WITH OREGON PUBLICATIONS The Herald is continually re ceiving urgent requests from eastern publishers to build up our circulation to a big figure by using their publications as a clubbing medium. These re quests come from the big dailies, tri - weeklies, semi- weeklies, weekly papers and monthly mag azines, and include nearly every shade and variety of publications known. When The Herald forms a combination for the benefit of its readers it is with publications edited and printed right here in Oregon. If we are to help build up anything it will be an Oregon institution. Why not? Why advertise and sell eastern publi cations when for Oregon people we have better things and as good a variety right at home? Some of our exchanges who are so justly berating their subscrib ers for patronizing eastern mail order houses might apply the lesson to themselves with much profit to the state in general. TRADE AT HOME It is reported that certain re tail tea and coffee houses of Port land are doing a thriving busi ness in Gresham and vicinity. It is also reported that some of these fellows are giving short weight. One case is reported to The Herald where a package supposed to weigh four pounds weighed less than three and one- half pounds. The surprising thing to The Herald is that our folks will insist on patronizing firms of this character, when they can do just as well or bet ter by trading with the home merchant, with no danger of being robbed by short weights or any other dishonest methods.
