Every newspaper worthy of the name circulates among all classes of men, who we believe have the highest regard for the paper that honestly and fearlessly advocates that which is known to be for the best interests of all regard less of party. The Herald is not ashamed of its standing as an independent newspaper. It has in the past and will in the future advocate the election of none but clean and capable men to office, realizing that in this only lies the future peace and prosper ity of the city, county, state and nation. The ctftnment which followed the president’s action in illus trating his special message on the Panama canal was insignifi cant as compared with the talk which a more recent performance created. When the last special message on the Brownsville in cident was sent to the senate, the White House secretary who brought it in carried also a pack age which resembled a large box of candy. Naturally there was much speculation as to ita con tents, especially as it was obvious that it had something to do with the message. When it was open ed finally, the clerk who per formed the operation took out a number of souvenirs of the riot m the little Texas town last August. There were empty shells, steel bullet casings and ether things tending to show that the shots fired on the night of the disturbance must have come from the rifles used in the army. The incident was prob ably without precedent in the senate. — Exchange. We notice among some of our exchanges frequent remarks con cerning the independent news paper. Some of the articles read WAITING FOR VOLF. could not be taken as compli mentary, yet. considering the source from whence they come I we do not believe that one should take them too seriously.
