BIG CROPS
Umatilla County Has Some
Wonderful Crops and
Large Acreage.

from Pendleton last Friday, where
they bad been eince Monday oj
last week attending the Grand
Lodge Knights of Pythias. The
boys are loud in their praise for
the cordial, warm hearted way i
which they were treated by tb
Pendleton people and say that the
own was simply turned over to
the visitors.
The recent session was the larg
est convention ever held"' by the
Grand Lodge aud one of the most
harmonious.
On Thursday the Pendleton lodge
hired automobiles ami gave all o
the visitors a ride out through the.
wheat fields and the bunch from
here lauded themselves upon the
cushions of a big seven passenger
touring Franklin which whisked
them out across the Reservation
to Adams, from Adams to Athena,
from Athena around to Helix and
back to Pendleton via Myric. It
was a good trip of about seventy
miles and right through some of
the best wheat land lying oat of
doors. Going from Pendleton to
Athena most of ihe wheat looked
exceptionally strong and was well
along in the dough, but from Athe
na to Elelix the wheat was shorter
and spotted and in the territory
between Helix and Pendleton -a
great amount of the grain was
short and in many instances very
weedy.
Umatilla county has some won
derful crops and some mighty good
farmers, and this fall, from the
present outlook for the price of
wheat, it will have a mountain of
money. -

business visitor in Heppner this

Big Colonization Scheme.
J. A. B'ock, representing the
Oregon Land and Colonization Co.,
with offices in Portland and 8an
Francisco, who baa been at lone
for some time, states that be has
bought the Woolery Estate tract
of land of 18,000 acres and claims
that by Fall his company will have
a thousand families, Germans and
Hungarians located on it. Tbey
sell only 260 acres to the man, no
more, but anything np to that
amount. No person with less than
a thousand dollars capital will be
located on the land. He says he
aims to locate a thousand dollars
to each 1G0 acres. The deal is
closed so far as Mr. Knappenberg
and Attorney Woodson are con
cerned, and it will now take the
sanction of the probate court and
the approval of the abstracts.
Mr. Block is a banker and repre
sents large interests. In his com
pany are three Hungarian farmers
from Can ids representing more
than 50 farmers and with authority
to invo3t for them. ThU company
just opened up a tract of land in
Clackamas county and has disposed
of the same to parties in the iden
tical wny he proposes to handle
this tract.

Hand Mangled.
Pat McDaid met with quite a
serious accident last Friday even
ing out at his place near Ella. He
was riding one horse and leading
another when the horse that be
was leading got scared and com
menced to poll back. The rope by
which Mr. McDaid was leading

around his band which was badly
mangled.
Mr. McDaid went to the Hepp
ner Sanitations where it was found
necessary to amputate one of the
fingers.
The land owners of Klamath and
Lake counties, especially of the
dry sections, will watch with inter
est the experiments to be made
this summer by Dave Edler, the
sheep king of Southern Oregon, in
drilling for water. His big machine
for that purpose has arrived.

THE CALIFORNIA BUILDING AT AIVP. EXPOSITION, SEATTLE.
California's handsome building is one of the very striking structures
on the grounds of the Alaeka-Yukon-Paciflc Exposition. It is in the old
Spanish Mission type cJ architecture encountered so frequently in South
ern California, and the detail of its front has attracted the attention of
artists and architects from all over the country.
In the building every county of the golden state will have an exhibit.

CONDON WON
THE GAME
Score of 3 to 4 in a Fast
and Pretty Game.
In the baseball game at Condon,
Sunday, between Heppner and
Condon, the latter won by a score
of three to four.
Both teams played exceptionally
good ball and the game was a pretty
one,
Welshou6, Heppner's twirler,
pitched a star game, striking out
16 men. Smead's base running
and a three base bit by Clark, were
features of the game.
The special train from Heppner
carried a big crowd from Heppner
as well as picking up many pas
sengers from stations along the
line. The beet of order prevailed
and everyone speaks very highly
of Condon's hospitality.
The Dallas station sgent was
called up on the phone the other
day by a woman who inquired of
him if a set of false teeth had been
found in the passenger coach on
its arrival there.

Autos For Alaska.
An illustration of how rapidly
Alaska i'b getting up o date with
every modern improvement is seen
in the establishment of an automo
bile 6tage line on the Valdez-Fair
banks road. Thn line is to start
on August 1, at which time the
government road will be in condi
tion for automobile use as far as
the summit of the mountains. By
August of next j ear it is promised
by Major Richardson that the road
will be in euch shape to travel the
entire distance from the coast to
Tanana.
This new line is to start with two
high powered machines, and next
sammer, when tLe road is complet
ed to Tanana, four more machines
will be put on the run. With this
auto line in running order, a tiip
to Fairbanks can be made in short
order and the discomforts of the
trail will be a thing of the pa--t.
Where the reads can be pat iu
practicable shape the automobile
will have fully as large a fi-ld of
usefulness in Alaska as it has de
veloped in the desert regions of
Nevada, and very largely for the
same reason. Where freight rates
are so entirely out of proportion to
the. firot cost of the goods as they
are in the interior of Alaska, gaso
line costs leas than horse feed, in
proportion to the power developed.
The substitution of autos for stages,
wherever roads are put into thafe
for travel, will follow over' a con
siderable portion of the country,
should the new line to Fairbanks
prove as succeseJul as it promises
to do.

meeting to be held in the conven
tion hall of the Portland Commer
cial clab on Saturday evening next.
Salem people will go in a body
to help Eugene to celebrate. But
it is pretty tough on some of us to
go to a dry town to celebrate, says
the Capital Journal.
