Editor Gazette: The writer ve
iled the primary room of the
Heppner Bchool a few minutee,
May 4. The little people were
working enthusiastically at a read
ing lesson. They Bhow much apt
itude in recognizing new words,
their work iu phonica having pie
pared them for this kind of work.
One class also did aome very cred
itable work in numbers. The
other class did not recite in num
bers while I was present I noted
that most of the pupils were care
ful aud painstaking with their
slatework. v
On Friday, I vtsited the Lex
ington school a short time. I found
Prof. Wilooi and hia assistants
busy with the closing work of the
year. The teachers and pupils
feel that they have done a good
year's work.
In the evening a local educa
tional meeting was held at the
hall. A large crowd was in at
tendance, including several teach
ers from t the adjoining districts.
On the program were seveial ex-
cellent musical numbers and reci
tations. Misses Ruth Brown and
Vesta Cutsforlh and Prof. Wilcox
each read an interesting and in
structive paper. The writer spoke
a short time upon "The Influence
of Environment."
The pu.?iis of the Lexington
school and soaae of their friends
have made arrangements for water
with which to irrigate the school
grounds. W. G. Scott furnisnes
the wind-mill and the water. The
pipe has been laid into the school
yard and the trees are not lacking
u irrigation now. Several trees
are already plauted and more will
be planted next year.

to Heponer and met defeat at the
bands of the local school young
sters iu a game of base ball, Sun
dny afternoon. This patne imme

single men in a twist at the Na
