Notice to Fruit Growers.
You must spray your Bppte and pear
trees within tbe next 39 days with a
liquid made by dissolving 12 pounds
blue vitrol in 100 gallons of water. This
is the most effective trjatment known
for all fungus diseases, including an
thractnoee (derived from anthrax, mean
ing ctrbunclf) which forms black spots
on the trunk and limbs, which soon de
stroys the iree. Some of the beat an
thoritie 4 eay fupgus diseases are more
destructive and m re to be dreaded than
all insect life. Every orobard in Morrow
county mutt be cleaned up this season.
You have had ami le time to accustom
yourselves to this work . by using the
blue vitriol spray now, and a thorough
spraying in February, or eailtr March,
with lime and sulphur, either the Rex
Spray or Niagara Spray made at Mood
Kiver. This will make all trees o'ean
and healthy after the fruit sets, The
trees must be sprayed three timed at in
tervals ftf about 20 davs with arsenate of
lead. By doing this we will have no
more wormv apples. We have not
epiayed nearly enough for the Codlin
M)tn. I am koing to devote the larger
part of my time with you during this
winter. I will show you how to prune
and clean your orchards up. Yon will
llnd it most profitable work. Our splen
did success at the Umatilla-Morrow Co.
Fair, at Pendleton should irreatly en
cour ge all of us. Now I am in deadly
earnest, this work must b done as I
suggest. I have been moit reasonable
with all of on. I am determined that
Morrow county will make a new record
this coming season, and our tiees must
be in clean, vigorous condition, to get
the test results, anil nr pcple have
had to eat wormy t mi i t long enough- I
am going to be witli you a great dtal
this coming year, and I shall gat.'er a
disphiy while inspecting the orchards,
and I ask you to benin your plans now
to grow choice vegetables and fruits for
exhibition.
We should have a f-lreet carnival in
Heppnor for two or three days, before
tlie Pendleton lair, showing cur own
people what we have. Now 1 have to
depend largely upon vour help in this
work. The work is iu ?c t'erfd I can't
possibly be ireneni at all p. aces while
"prayinj;, tun 1 can ana wi.i come to
your homes acd consult with you, and
ihow you how to do. And if you don't
try to do anything, I can prewnt yonr
felling any unclean fruit, and destroy
your diseased trees. I don't expect any
onble in this way. I have been try
ing to ;et svme word ol i tivice or en
couragement fioin our district inspector,
K. H. Weber, at The Dailes, during the
hree years I have been fruit inspector.
1 have not received one word from him
in regard to it, and I teel that a cussing
would be preferable to this Eternal Si
nee.
