According to the repoit of Fost
tnaster General Meyer, the postal
deficit for the last fiscal year was

Ralph I. Thompson, of Iieppner,
a student at the Oregon Agricul
tural College, was lately elected
Custodian of the Civil Engineering
Association. The association is a
very important department, and it
is considered a great honor to be
elected to be one of the officers.
The demand for alfalfa meal has
ehown a wonderful growth during
the last few months, until the ca
pacity oE the single plant at Echo
Las been overtaxed. The same
management is now starting the
erection of a new plant at Wapato,
'VVash. The latter plant will have
a capacity of 50 tons a day, or dou
ble the size of the grinder at Echo.

The much needed moisture came
Tuesday night and yesterday. The
fact that the weather is very warm
for the time of year, will make the
grass and grain grow rapidly with
the moiB'.ure that was badly need
ed. Good Potatoes.
W. E. Severance, of Hardman,
gent to the Gazette office this week
a box containing 15 potatoes that
were the finest that we have seen.
They are the Polaris variety and
the 15 spuds weighed 29 pounds,
being smooth and solid. The com
bined lerjgth of the 15 potatoes
when laid end to end was 11 feet
and 3 inches.

At the Oregon Agricultural College
alfalfa has beeu growing successfully for
several years, and tests are being made
by the agronomists with different va
rieties to determine which will suit the
conditions best in this state. The sta
tion men are glad at all times to answer
questions in regard to its cultivation.
A few miles from Corvallis, Mr. W.
Ham do cut this year 200 tons of alfalfa
hay. It yielded about 1 tons to the
acie in two cuttines. Before seeding
to alfalfa the land had been "cropped
out." In fourteen years fourteen grain
crops had been taken from the land, and
Mr. Hamlin exp'ains that on richer land
the .vicld is mud) heavier. He further
est Inns that the rllest stand yields the
best, showing that it takes several years

to make a good growth.
