HUNTING IS
PROHIBITED
On Government Irrigation
Lake at Hermiston.
Tbat the government hae issued
an order prohibiting hunting in the
vicinity of the Cold Springs reser
voir near Herraiston waa the state
ment of Game Warden O. F. Tur
ner yesterday. The ground around
the big inland lake will be Btaked
off in a few days and notices posted
forbidding all hunting on the pre
mises. The location of the reservoir
makes the place especially good as
a roosting place for ducks and
geese and if protected properly will
be a means of increasing the game
in this section of the country many
fold. The reservoir is four miles
from the Columbia and about Rev
en from the Umatilla and if hunt
ing i9 permanently prohibited near
it the geese and ducks, when driven
by hunters from both rivers, will
make the reservoir a permanent
roosting place and will come out in
all directions in search of food. ,
This fact, Mr. Turner and many
Others say, will make the hunting
much better for everybody all over
this section.
In the past, it is said by many
who have observed matters, that
the privilege of hunting on tha
lake has been subjected to flsgrant
abuses. Hunters Lava gone out in
the water on rafts and at night on
fire boats and have slaughtered the
ducks and geese mercilessly. If
this state of affairs is allowed to
continue the game will be driven
completely out of the country.
Another point which has been
mentioned in favor of the steps
which are being taken by the gov
ernment is that many people are
around the lake and shooting
would be dangerous. In every re
spect it is considered a splendid
ruliDg and one which should be
enforced to the letter. Tee man
in charge of the reservoir will be
instructed to keep continual watch.

But it is now said tbat this does
