"Imprisonment for debt was nominally
ubollshed in England many years ago,
but, nevertheless, the actual number of
cases of Imprisonment has sine annu
ully Increased, proportionally faster
than the population. Technically, the
Imprisonment is for contempt of court
The Judge orders the debtor to pay
before a given day, failing which he
may be Jailed for contempt, not exceed
ing forty days, and in case he pays the
debt he is released at once.
"The power of committal resides In
."he Judge of the court. Some judges
exercise it more freely than others. In
Nottingham county Imprisonment for
debt Is rare, I am told. In other pop
ulous court districts with much more
court business the ciises of imprison
ment do not exceed flft.v a year, while
in some less jwpulous districts with
less court business the number reaches
5K a year. It seems, however, that
the Indulgence shown to delinquent
debtors is steadily decreasing, for the
cases of imprisonment in the country
have increased from about 5,000, in
1S70, to more than 12,000 last year.
"Credit is not abused in England as
ft Is in the United States, however.
Many men have credit, of course, tut
the word 'means more in England than
it does In America. A man whose
credit Is good must have earned a repu
tation for upright business honesty be
fore he is trusted. Shopkeepers will not
credit a man who is not known person
ally to them us a man of good business
standing, and if recommended by an
other, they will by some subterfuge put
off the Intending purchaser until they
can find out whether the recommenda
tion Is genuine. When credit Is once
given, the person to whom it is extend
ed Is not continually annoyed by the
receipt of bills."

The right of a physician called Into a
case as an expert to additional com
pensation Is often Insisted upon, and
sometimes questioned. In Burnett v.
Freeman, 103 Southwestern Reporter,
121, the Kansas City Court of Appeals
collates numerous authorities on this
proposition, and conies to the conclu
sion that such an expert Is not entitled
to additional compensation for his ser
vices in a case.
The decision of Judge Dill of the
New Jersey Court of Errors and Ap
peals in Vanderbilt v. Mitchell, 67 At
lantic Reporter, 97, serves admirably to
illustrate that the powers of a court of
equity are adequate to meet the de
mands made thereon by constantly
changing social conditions. In this
case It appears that a birth certificate
was made by the physician present at
the birth of n child. This certificate
swt forth, among other things, the time,
the date and place of the birth of the
child, the name of each of the parents,
the maiden name of the mother, and
the name of tlie child. It appears that
in making the certificate the physician
was Imposed upon by false statements
I of the mother nB to the .paternity of
i the child, and certified, contrary to the
! fact, that complainant In this suit was
i tho father of the child. Judge Dill
holds that the court has power to cor
"ect the record.

pimples, rashes, eruptions, etc., show that some unhealthy humor or acid
impurity is diseasing ami corrupting the circulation, so that instead of
supplying nourishment and strength to the fine, delicate tissues of the skin,
it is continually pouring out its acrid and unhealthy accumulations.
Kxtcrnal applications of salves, washes, lotions, etc., may relieve some of
the itching and other discomfort caused by skin troubles, and for this reason
should be used, but such treatment cannot reach the humor-laden blood,
and therefore cannot cure. A thorough cleansing of the blood is the only
cure for skin diseases. S. S. S., a purely vegetable preparation, is the lest
and quickest remedy. It goes down into the circulation and neutralizes
and removes the acids, impurities and humors, thoroughly purifies the
circulation and permanently cures skin diseases of every kind. When
S. S. S. has driven the humors and impurities from the blood, arid cooled
and cleansed the aciddieated circulation, every symptom passes away, the
skin is again nourished with rich, healthful blood and the trouble cured, as
the cause has been removed. Book on skin diseases and any medical advice
