Very adroit was the march that Llje
Loomls stole on the "statute of limit
tlous." Llje was the factotum of Guy's
Nock. He did a miscellaneous business,
as carpenter, cow doctor and cofflrj
maker, adding to his other functions
that of undertaking to the county poor
house. He was withal an easy, good
uatured fellow, free to trust and a
most Indulgent creditor.
Among the others whom Lije had
trusted to his cost was Greg Grimes,
without exception the greatest promise
maker uud breaker iu Guy's Neck. 1
verily believe he would if possible hav
put a creditor off to the last judgment
and then, on the score of its belus a
busy day, have begged him to wait till
tomorrow.
Greg had wheedled Lije with prom
ises till the latter's claim was "outlaw
ed." Losing patience ut last, Lije took
his account over to the squire's, when,
to his no small discomfiture, he learned
that unless he could get n new promise
from his debtor, with u witness to it,
he might whistle for his bill.
Such fellows as Greg always know a
good deal of law, especially the sharp
points of it. Greg-would talk as freely
and was as full of promise.-! as ever,
when ne and Lije were aloue, but be
fore others would either evade the su)h i
ject in- else remain provokingly mum. j
One day Llje drove up to Grog's door !
with his old frruy mare and spring wag-,
on, a plain pine eoCiu onef those flat j
topped affairs doomed good enough for j
poor folks being visible behind tlifl :
seat. I
"Moruiu", neighbor," said Lije.
"Same to you," said Greg. "Goin' txi ,
phmt a pauper, I see." j
"Y-a-a-s. Old L ike took rather sud j
dent leave last night and went to try '
the charity of another world."
"Which is ti ) more'u fair," said Greg, !
"seeln" how long he's Kved on the char-.
Ity of this."
"Would you mind gittTu' in and com- j
hi' along, neighbor?" said Lije. "It's '
mighty dull goiu' to a funeral all aloue j
by oneself."
Grg didn't mind and straightway
mounted by Lije's side. i
Tbe two chatted nway after a sort ,
to prove how cheerful good company '
can render even a grave occasion.
"I s'pnse you hevn't forgot that little j
bill o miue?" Llje at last took the lib-!
erty to hint.
"Not by no means," said Greg. ' Let's
see, now. How much did you sny '.t
was? I mlsreinember rightly."
"Even besides seven years' in
terest."
"Quito right." Greg assented. "I reo
ollect it now."
"Ef it's at nil Ineonvenient to pay
It," said Llje, "don't put yourself out
on no account."
"I've been threntcnin' to settle it fot
a month back," said Greg, "but times
hev been tight, an' an' how would
Monday week do?"
"To a dot," answered Lije.
"I'll send It round," said Greg.
A tTirlous sound came from the cof
finthe ghost of a chuckle, Dtirdles
would have called it. Greg gave one
Jump and "lit" in an adjacent cow pas
ture. Looking back, he saw Lije's
prentice, tlie most mischievous in Guy's
Neck, but with plenty of sense and of
lawful age to be a witness sitting up
In the coliiu laughing like mad.
Greg took in the situation at a glanw.
He had been daped lntf committing
himself before a witnea.
"It's a dirty, nasiy, titan Uick!" he
cried. '-v.- "f
"What Is it?" said Llje. ;
"Why, triflin' with a body's feelin's-
about old Loke, makin' b'lieve he
oead."
"An' bo it Is," snM Llje, "only I was
goln arter the buddy lnstid of fetchln
it away." j
Greg turned off in disgust, Llje baww
Ing after him: i
"Don't forgit Monday weelE,an,'j
p'rhaps It'll save us both some trou-1
ble." ' 4
Greg didn't forget, but he has never
more than half enjoyed himself at au
