Machine fighting C'jke.
Antagonistic to tbe verge of bitterness
remnants of the old1 machine which
once dominated Oregon politic! have
taken op the fight for the defeat of
Statement No. I and all who favor that
method. .
In Portland and the other large cities
of the state, tbe machine crowd is cen
tering its fight upon II. M. Cake, candi
date for the Repub'ican nomination tor
United States Urnator. Mr. Cake is a
firm believer in trie popular election of
United States sena'ors and because of
his belief it: the people, has incurred
the enmity of the old machine politicians
Those who are close I) the situation,
however, believe that the machine fight
against Mr. Cake is the best thing that
could happen for his campaign.
The people of Oregon expressed by
their adoption of the primary law and
Statement No. 1, what they thought f
machine methods. Tl e o d system htnU
brought shame and disgrace upon tli
state had made the city of ftalem
almost a Gomorrah in the way ot pob't.
cat wickedness. Jerioutcala and newa
papers of national circulation pointed to
ou state as one of sodden political cor1
rnptiou, of disgraceful scandals.
It is in the hope of reviving this old
method by the defeat of Statement No.
1 and of Mr. Cake, that the machine
politicians of started such a bitter oju-
sade against this new law. Iodeed it is
their only hope. Under the present
system they are without a job. It is
impossible f( r a dictator to sit in his
office and say what shfll and shall not
be done byAhe people of Oregon. No
longer is a Saturnalia of bribery and
corruption possible in Salem.
Evidences of this hostility on the part
of the "system" have been apparent in
various towns where M'. Cuke has
spoken during his piesent itinerary.
Large crowds have Hacked to hear him,
but conpicuous by their absence, were
the old-time leaders. And in this con
nection it is a fact worth mentioning
that most of these antagonistic politi
cians are ehher c flii;e holders or have
sjine clfim upon those who ere st pres
ent in office.
The people who are rallying to Mr.
C.ike'H standard a-e those Republicans
who a'e4ntenselv loyal to their party
but who re-ent sny such dictatorial
methodc as the old machine was wont
to use.
It is a foregone conclusion that State
ment No. 1 will prevail iu Oregon at the
conirg election. Itisnho a foregone
conclusion that Mr. Caki he only real
active supporter cf this measure will
be elected if the Hepub.ican voters of
tiiis state do their duty. 2nd there is no
oom for doubt but that t.'iey wi.l per
form that dutv.

never seemed so bright. You are welcome to look, never un
