L. E. McBee, of Cecil, lost a val-

Sheep shearing was commpneed
at tbe sheep ranches of the Prine
ville Land and Livestock company
at Muddy Station in Crook county
last Monday. The shearing was
commenced on a band of 1G00
bucks. The shearers will be paid
25 cents per bead for shearing.
Mrs. L. E. Colin and daughter,
Gladys, returned Monday from an
extended visit in the Willamette
Valley.

SOCIETY.
There was a very pleasant basket
social at the Matteson Bchool bouse
last Saturday evening. Nine bas
kets were sold which brought in
$58.75, which will be used to buy
au organ for tbe public school. It
was one of those very enjoyable
neighborhood gatherings in which
everybody present bad a pleasant
time. Tbe bidding was spirited
and lively as shown by the high
prices paid for the baskets.

Roberts' ball last Friday evening.
These parties seem to be highly
appreciated by tbe young gentle
men, that is tbe fortunate, as the
burden of expense disappears at the
door. Every fellow now knows
bis exact standing with the ladies
and it is certainly a study to see
tbe different expressions on the
faces of the gentlemen.
A large crowd was in attendance
and a good time is reported by all.

A very pleasant surprise party
was given at tbe home of Iev. and ,
Mrs. Charles H. Porter last Tues
day evening in honor of their son
Edwin's birthday, Tbe guests
were tbe ninth and tenth grades of
the high school, and a few other
friends. The evening was spent
in playing oral games, in which all
present took part, which made the
tiiie pass smoothly aud pleasantly.
After partaking of a delicate lunch
tbe gunsts were entertained for a
bore while with graphophone
music, fillowfd by vocal solos by
2d win Porter and O.G.Crawford.
Tbe guests then tuck their depart
ure, all wishing the joung gentle
man many more nappy birthdnj's.

Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Minor enter
tained about forty voung people at
their borne Saturday evening Feb.
29, in honor of their son Ellis'
third birthday. Ellis is 6ixteen
years of age. The Minor home
was decorated with red roses and

web of various colored eoids was
woven all over the large double
parlor, one end of each string start
iug in the dining room and ending
in the front hall, added to the de&
orative effect. Later in the even
iug the guests ei joyed unwinding
the web to secure partners for Bup-
per. In the early pait of the even
ing piffo was played. There were
ten tables. Four prizes were given,
two for the eirls and two for the
boys. The lucky girls were Hazel
Gilliam and Marie Hager, who
each received a dainty cap and
saucer.

each secured a box of candyi
Tanch and ice cream were served.
Mrs. Minor was assisted by ' Mrs.
