Ed Burgess, Tuesday received a

H. W. Fell who recently suffered
the fracture of his leg, is in the
city. Mr. Fell is able to be out on
crutches and is getting along all
right.
Dr. N. G. Blalock, of Walla
Walla, and Wm. J. Mariner of
Blalock, were incoming passengers
Sunday evening. In company with
J. J. McGee they visited the Willow
creek coal mines Monday.
Dr. and Mrs. M. B. Metier, Clare
Walton and E. G. Noble, came
down from Ditch creek Monday.
A large number of Heppner
people are now camping at this
popular mountain resort.

MOUNTAINS
Itlrii Halstead Undergoes Unpleaa
ant Experience.
Mrs. Halstead of Echo, while
camping at Ditch creek underwent
experience last Sunday that she
will not forget soon.
Starting CjUt at 7 o'clock in the
morning Mrs. Halstead wi th a pail
in hand was locking for huckle
berries. In looking for the lus
cious fruit, she lost her bearings
and became lost.
Not returning at the proper time
the campers became alarmed and
a search party consisting of John
Rasmus, Orve Rasmus, Wm. Ball
and Wm. Ayers, was organized
and started at 7 o'clock in the
evening in search of the missing
woman. The party traveled until
11 o'clock at night. At the head
of CapplingHr canyon about four
miles from Ditch creek, the worn.
an was found sitting on a log, hav
ing screamed in response Jto calls
of the searching party.
Mrs. Halstead was badly scared
and excited and could hardly be
induced to turn back, firmly be-
ieving thai she was going in the
right direction.

J. C. Lonergan, buyer for Frye-
Bruhn Co., of Seattle, last week
contract id of Izee cattlemen 2500
li iad of 3-year-old steers, to be de
livered October 12, at Pendletoo.
Tnis is the largest band of 3-year-
old steers ever bought in the Izee
couutry, and at the price paid,
which is much higher than the
same grade of cattle brought last
year, means that the Izee cattle
growers will receive in the neigh,
borhood of $100,000 for this band
of cattle. The Izee cattle are al
ready iu prime condition and will
weigh out heavy at the time of
delivery. Ah eady several hundred
head of fat cows have been sold in
Bear valley and Izee and catt emen
generally are jubilant over the pros
pects of the cattle industry. Blue

C. W. Hug, 27 years old, who
was born and raised on a farm
near Elgin, has been chosen
pincipal of the Eugene high school.
In many places in Oregon there
is a revolt against the Pacific Tele
phone & Telegraph company and
new companies are being formed to
establish an independent service.
The time is nearly here when some
thing along this line will be doing
in Grant and Harney counties.

Governor Comer of Alabama,
has signed the bill requiring all
saloons in that state to close at 7
p. m. and (8;30 p. m. in the larger
cities. )
A hail storm struck southern
Brown and northern Spink counties,
South Dakota, and destroyed all
crops within an area of 160 square
miles. The district is the- richest
in South Dakota.

Charles Holt, a well known phar.
macist of Walla Walla, disappeared
June 27, leaving a wife and two
little children. So far aB known
all his business and family rela
tions were square and honorable.
Holt had lived in Walla Walla a
vear, coming there from Waits
burg, where be was employed as a
pharmacist 15 years.
Thomas J. Hailey, former Justice
of the State Supreme Court is very
ill at his home in Portland. Mr.
Hailey is well known in Morrow
county, having at one time served
as district attorney for this district.
