The Oregon Land and Water
company is sending out a big lot
of circulars to eastern inquirers.

the W. C. T. U. and other advocates of
temperance made a campaign against
the sale of llqnor in ii capitol of the

ful, and now they feci encouraged to
try to stop the liquor trade throughout
the District of Columbia.
It is true that there Is much talk
about the facilities that will be af

Numerous bills are being Introduced
for the suitable commemoration of
events in the Revolution by the erec
tion of monuments or otherwise. One
of these measures is for a monument
to commemorate the battle of Prince
ton and appropriates 30,000 therefor.
The Princeton Rattle Monument asso
ciation has been formed in New Jersey
to promote this enterprise, and it is
making a strong effort to get congress
to provide for a memorial column on
the site of the struggle in which Wash
ington defeated the British.
Another bill is for the appropriation
of $100,000 to erect a monument in
York county, S. C, on the field of the
battle of King's Mountain to the mem
ory of General William Campbell and
the men who fought there.
Still another bill Is for the appropria
tion of 25,000 to erect a monument in
Cherokee county, S. C, on the field of
the battle of Cowpens, in memory of
General Daniel Morgan and his men,
who defeated a part of Cornwallis'
command under Tarleton at this point

plea for better pay in the army. He

Funston savs that no one believes the
army officer should attempt to compete
in display with persons of wealth, but
they should be able to live decently
without being continually embarrassed
by fear of debt. Continuing report

"Of even greater importance than
the question ot officers pay is that ot
the enlisted men of the service, for the
army will have all the officers the law
allows, regardless of pay, but the very
existence of the army is threatened if
the wages in civil life continue to rise,
unless steps are taken to increase the
pay of rank and file. The wonder is
that the wretched pay offered in the
army obtains as nany good men aB it
does."
