Washington, Sept. 6 The agricul
tural department has obtained and
tested alfalfa seed from various dealers
a id today published a list of firms send
ing out adulterated product.
Three hundred fifty -two samples
were examined, of which 160 were
found to contain seed of the destructive
parasitic plant dodder; nine were
adulterated with the seed of the yellow
trefoil; nine with bar clover.

At the meeting of the Umatilla
County Woolgrowers' association beld
here Saturday a movement was started
for the purpose of securing needed
quarantine legislation from the coming
session ot the legislature. Two things
are greatly desired by the local beep
men the removal of the federal quaran
tine, and a law which will have the
effect of keeping Oregon ranges for
Oregon eheep, In order to bring these
subjects before tbe state conyention
which will be held at Condon next
week, a committee of five was appoint
ed as follows : Dan P. Smy tbe, Douglas
Belts, J. N. Burgess, William Slusher
and C. M. Matthews.
Aside from the action regarding
quarantine laws the most important
action taken Saturday was the naming
of delegates to the state woolgrowers'
convention which meets next week.
Uuder the rules ot the state association
each county is allowed one delegates for
each 10,000 sheep within the county,
thns making Umatilla entitled to 25

tective Thiele went to Adams' home
without a warrant and brought bis wife
and two children, aued 7 years and 10
months, to the penitentiary, where they
ha.ve since been confined in the female
ward, no legal proceedings being bad.
The wife's lettem were also opened by
tbe officials.
Attorneys for tbe prosecution claim
A lams has been staying in the peni
tentiary at bis own request, fearing
viience. This statement is refuted by

milled to consult relatives or lawyers
except one whose fees were paid by the
