feller's plan has always been to control
or destroy. Tbe fact that denatured
alcohol will be a dangerous competitor
of tbe Standard Oil company is the
cause of the reaching out tor control of
the principal source of supply of this
pn duct.
Governor Chamberlain has ordered
Secretary of State Dunbar to demand
from every railroad company in tbe
state reports showing tbe exact con
ition of the road, tbe business transact
ed , its financial and physical condition.
Should tbe companies refuse to comply,
steps will be taken by the executive to
enforce the penalties provided, which
are fines from $5,000 to $10,000 for each
offense and imprisonment from two to
five years for officials who falsify re
ports. The Royernor acts under an old
law, which has been considered a dead
etter, but which be is convinced is still
n force. This can be regarded as the
first step in Oregon in the battle for
railroad rate regulation, which is now
raging with such intenseness through
out tbe nation. Oregon Journal.
Every insurance commissioner in the
country should follow the example of
Commissioner Davis, of Nevada: Mr.
Davis recently received a letter from
the manager of the London & 'Lan-
ashire requesting information as to the
conduct of its business in Nevada.
Commissioner Davis replied to the
company as follows: "You are
generally charged with conducting a
welching business. You certainly
cinnot expect to do business on these
lines in California and continue to write
policies in tbis state. I bave ordered
all policies carried by your company on
atate property cancelled, and will give
you two weeks to begin settling ddlar
for dollar in San Francisco, and if there
is still complaint of your buisness
methods in San Francisco your license
