northwest JHeat Prosperous.
New York, Jan. 13 The Wall Street
Journal says: On January 11, stocks
of all Pacific railways in tbe northwest
both American and Canadian, reached
remarkable prices. Following are the
net advances of the six roads during the
year ending January 11, 1906: Cana
dian Pacific 42, Great Noithern pre
ferred 64j, Soo Line common 74!, Soo
Line preferred 35, Union Pacific com
mon 41.
On the basis of these advances and of
stocks at p esent outstanding for tbe
various road, total appreciation of the
market value of these five railways is
$266,8(53,500. So far as tbo railway
world is concerned these figures are a
concise exprei-sion of the most striking
n arket phenomenon of tbe year.
Without exception the railways that
serve the north Pacific coast appear to
have ma le advances in traffic, in rev
enues and in ac ual technical position,
beyond all other railways of the United
State and Canada. The revenues are
enormous and the traffic seems to come
to tbea3 railways without tbe least ef
fort. One ibing after another arises to
help them. Tt.ey are the properties,
and have long been recognized as such
which have the greatest potential unde
veloped resources.
Big Rabbit Drive.
Walla Walla, Wash., Jan. 13. Dr. N.
G. Blalock is planning for a big rat bit
drive on Blalock island February 3.
Sportsmen from all over tbe northwest
will be iDvited to attend, and as an in-
ducement special rates are to be made
from Spokane, Portland and way points.
The party will arrive at the island in
tb morning and have breakfast. Then
will follow the drive. The Blalock
company will furnish beaters who will
start at one end of ths island driving
tbe rabbits toward an enclosure at the
north end of tbe island.
Five years ago at a big drive on the
ranch 1,500 rabbits were killed. The
drive February 9 will be for the pur
pose of ridding the island of the pests.
Dr Blalock says the rabbits are so thick
that the alfalfa fields are threatened
with destruction.
Large Immigration Figures,
New York, Jan. 10. The official
figures g'ven out today by the bureau of
statistics on Ellis island, show that the
immigration during the year 1905 wss
enormous. It was greater than in 1903,
which had been the banner year and
also much greater than in 1904. The
grand total is nearly up to the million
mbrk. There was substantial increase
in ail classes and, despite the fact that
the immigration figures were larger
than ever before in the history of the
poit.the cumber of persons traveling
in the cabins of tbe liners reached
enormous proportions.
Of the total of 992,0(15 persons who
arrived by the various lines from foreign
ports the largest number was carried on
the ships of the North Germau Lloyd
line, from Bremen and from Mediter
ranean ports. In 125 voyages 177,91(1
passengers were landed in this port by
the steamships of this liue and of these
15,i'"4 were first cabin voyagers. Next
in order came the Hamburg-American
line, then tbe Cunard line. Of the
total of 780,012 steerage passenjers
brought here, about 71,00J were immi
grants. Jury LUt lor I !((.
